This place has served many functions over the years. Once a quarantine facility for various infectious disease, then a "foster care" facility where parents could drop off their unwanted children no questions asked to be mixed in with the special needs kids that were also permanent residents here. Care consisted mostly of heavy doses of medication and electroshock therapy to keep the kids as docile as possible. Lower brain activity, easier for the staff to manage. Kids were so abused here it is ridiculous. If you wet the bed, you didn't get to eat that day. If you kept trying to run around or play, you'd get chained to a railing.
Later, under a new owner, it served as a regular state cancer center for different types of treatment. The previous owner had abandoned the property after deciding he didn't want to pay back the loans he took out, and left the place pretty much wide open. Today, it is finally locked down. I think the fun of being able to explore this incredible building is over and it will soon be renovated and converted into apartments with a few shops and restaurants on the ground floor.
This video serves as one of the last looks inside. Unfortunately the sun was going down and I barely even got to see 1/3 of it, but still you can see what kind of crazy items got left behind. You will notice that one half of the building closed in the 1970s and was locked up and sectioned off while the other half continued to operate until 2011. Walking through here is like stepping through decades of time and decay...
