ILM has a few videos like this on their channel for Star Wars and their other movies.
the amount of detail in those environment models is staggering
Couple other vids They actually modelled the inside structures/beams of the Star Destroyers, some of the details even match the old cross-section books. The amount of time poured into making a beautiful environment like Eadu's - where the modeling of the mountains and ground is obscured not only by night and motion but by rain and fog - is astounding. It looks absolutely gorgeous even with just the models. Imagine how that scene would look if it were rendered with daytime coloring and lighting.
the amount of detail in those environment models is staggering
one of the other BTS videos said they randomly placed a camera within the city at various angles to create their mattes because generating literally thousands of random scenarios to pick from was a better choice than having someone decide themselves
As far as CGI goes, Rogue One had some of the best I've seen. The space battle really made me want another game where you're just a single fighter trying to survive a bunch of capital ships slugging it out, Freespace style
I've never caught that guy from A New Hope before.
I'm also impressed just how much detail the environments have. I wonder what beasts those computers have to be. But come on, that Tarkin actor was ready to go. No need to remake Tarkin's face by CGI. I mean, the Mon Mothma actress was allowed to use her face. As for Leia, they could have just used a shot from behind or better yet not shoving every character in.

Tarkin is the overseerer of the Outer Rim and the Death Star project, Vader would be called in because the Death Star is the empire's most important project, and Leia well we know why Leia is there because of ANH. the droids could have just been in the background, perhaps on the Tantive IV at the end, out of focus in the corridor, no need to have any speaking roles.

When it was first rumored those two would have cameos I expected an actual background cameo of just passing by, not literally bumping face first into the main cast and scolding them for a few seconds
I've never caught that guy from A New Hope before.
Oh man, I nearly shit myself in the theater when Red and Gold leaders showed up. It was such an awesome and unexpected set of cameos, and I won't deny that I had a total fanboy moment.

It's amazing how well 40 year old footage holds up to the new stuff

Every single time any reference showed up, about a quarter of the theater erupted in applause. It was kinda embarrassing really.

Hell give us a huge continent on a planet in the Star Wars universe and the Empire/Rebels fight for supremacy, and it can be the new Rogue Squadron
Serious question, did you clap? Every single time any reference showed up, about a quarter of the theater erupted in applause. It was kinda embarrassing really.
I've never seen a movie where the audience applauded at any point, not even the end.
Your cinema audiences in the US are embarrassing.
Probably the same kind of people who clap when a plane lands.
Sooooo this but unironically? -RLM-
Yes. I'm not even joking. I almost cringed out of my chair. Also really obnoxious because it covered up more than a few pieces of semi-important dialogue.
