oh man. there are going to be SO many edits of this.
I was getting really worried I wouldn't be hearing any more of this stuff from Radiohead, so pleased they can still pull it off. With an awesome video too!

This reminds me a lot of early naughties music videos. I love it.

I almost fell off my seat in excitement to see Radiohead released something new, being my favourite band and all, but I must admit this doesn't have the instrumental or melodic charm of so much of their discography. Most will likely disagree and it is certainly not bad or anything, I just think they set the bar high for themselves.

And not to mention that there are several different variations of the song with entirely different moods. Another song in their catalog that went through some crazy changes was Nude, it was first performed back in 1997, and it took them almost 10 years to put it on a record. They're absolutely insane perfectionists. I'm amazed that Lift, let alone Man-O-War, were finally released as real tracks. Hopefully this means we'll see other rarities like Cut A Hole and Skirting On The Surface come out next.
Ah okay; that makes a lot more sense. The chorus is unusually poppy for them so I can see why they didn't release originally.

I'll always like Kid A, In Rainbows, and AMSP better than their early stuff. Guitar music is only one of the things they're good at, but you wouldn't know it if they hadn't branched out.

I tend to prefer most band's earlier music and I think it is just because bands tend to try to increase their appeal with subsequent albums, meaning their distinctive style becomes less so.

OK Computer and its subsequent touring made Thom sick of doing guitar rock music, so him and the rest of the band decided to do something new for their own enjoyment.
I am pretty surprised how much people like this song. It just sounds so generic in terms of chord progression. I sometimes hate that I got into jazz and classical because it opens me up to weirder music I prefer, and then I get bored of 1, 6, 4, 5 chords in so many songs etc. etc. Here is something I wrote when I was 19 and it should hopefully show that I do love Radiohead and that they inspire me - I am not being contrarian for the sake of it. Which is great, otherwise, their style become redundant and overdone. I've never been a fan of bands trying to recreate the same album years after years. Why create something that already exist ? It makes it feel like the group I'm listening to has become stagnant; like it's always going to be the same formula over and over and I'm never going to be surprised by something new. In a way, I feel like it's them trying to play it safe, because daring to try doing something different could be met with potential backlash. This is why I love Radiohead so much, they are the complete opposite of this. They reach out to places I'd never believe I could be taken to. Every album offers something the previous one didn't. You have so much music flexibility from them, you can explore Radiohead without going: "Oh, I've already been there before". Their newest album, A Moon Shaped Pool is also no exception. Anyway, great video, great music. Though I'll admit I did prefer Man of War. But it's pretty hard to top too.
I see your point, and I definitely got bored of Muse, despite once adoring them, when their music became so predictable in later albums. Maturity is also definitely an aspect of this, as you say, but bands I once loved such as M83, Muse and Coldplay are good examples of the progression I describe. It's still great music - just feels less personal to them. I am once again surprised you enjoyed the music, but each to their own! :) I figure you would not enjoy my thing I posted as a result tbh.

Also that woman who got in the elevator at the beginning is supposedly Thom's new girlfriend, which I am hella happy for him. Also that little girl who presses all the buttons is Agnes, his daughter.
