Is this movie okay to watch if you haven't seen Arise? I should probably get on to doing that anyway.

Cool, but not gonna take a 3 hour road trip to see the movie in a select theater.
Ha. Kusanagi's original english voice is on another character.
Not a fan of the Arise, this trailer isn't really doing it for me either which is a shame. Also that title is the dumbest thing ever.
The trailer looked cool, but damn that music playing was badass.
don't know why they put in New in the title. the subtitle is just The Movie in japanese.
Not a fan of the Arise, this trailer isn't really doing it for me either which is a shame. Also that title is the dumbest thing ever.
arise's animation itself was probably the worst I've ever seen, the only way I can explain it is like this: The characters were moving at 5 fps while everything else was going at a smooth 60 (not to mention all the animation errors, like fucked up faces). The only good thing about it were the background designs. It was just so stiff and lifeless, not unlike watching a comic book play out in slow motion. I was reminded of it all over again watching this trailer, I can't believe they haven't changed a thing, you'd think they would have a better budget for a movie like this. [editline]a[/editline] The person who made the tune posted a soundcloud link to it so theres that
I'm not sure what to think. Sure the animation looks good, and the story seems to be angling for the mix of action, politics / economy speak, and postmodern mindsets and surreal that the franchise is known for, but something just seems slightly.. weird. Maybe it's just my nostalgia for Stand Alone Complex getting in the way. Interesting that they're going for a younger Kusanagi and returning to the extreme uncanny valley facial expressions for her and other cyborgs too, since SAC had some uncanny cyborgs but nothing compared to this or the original movie.
I'll probably check out Arise this time around and go see the movie. Looks like they kept the metaphysical, philosophical elements thankfully and its not just run-gun-with-cyborgs. Anybody else having trouble verifying tickets? The only two theaters near me (According to the website) say they don't have any showings for it.
Arise was okay but it doesn't hold a candle to SAC, and I highly doubt this is going to be as good as the original film, or any of the SAC films.
i watch this and just miss all the old VAs in their old roles batou just sounds like piccolo now. i like chris sabat but ehhhhh
Wait what the hell is this? Arise had 5 episodes that were 50 minutes each. So it was a movie in this respect. But then they took these 5 episodes and made a shorter TV series with it, which had missing scenes and was hard as hell to follow JUST to make a Movie now (again?) and cut over 250 minutes of footage down to a 90 - 110 minute movie?
Ha. Kusanagi's original english voice is on another character.
This really bothers me.

The TV series had two original episodes that tie the plot to this new movie.

Eh, looks ok, still a fan of the original 90's animation.
Eh, looks ok, still a fan of the original 90's animation.
I only watched all of it a year ago (Binged all the movies in order, and then the T.V Series)but I very much preferred the two movies, I thought they went together extremely well, but I can understand why people might like the TV series style more.

But if it's a new thing, I am looking forward to it.
This really bothers me.
I actually didn't mind Kusanagi's voice actor from the '95 film. It'll be weird hearing her voice from another character.
I dunno about you guys, I really couldn't get into the anime series but after watching this trailer i'm sure as fuck gonna watch this one. The music is fascinating as well.

Just wish it was longer than 4 episodes. I wanted to see this but the closest place is 2 hours away and on the day of fallout 4
I actually didn't mind Kusanagi's voice actor from the '95 film. In any case I don't seriously mind Maxwell (the other VA). What bothers me is having both of them essentially holding a conversation. It just feels weird because even though I know McGlynn isn't the major here, it sounds like it.
And the character the original voice actress of Motoko is playing is her military superior, one of the antagonists. That's even more awkward.

Taking a few hours out of your day to go and watch something you want to see in a cinema (that probably won't be happening again any time soon) at the expense of being a few hours behind random people on the Internet in a video game seems like a decent trade to me. [editline]21st October 2015[/editline] Also I'm trying to convince myself anime isn't total trash (and I made a good start by purging the demons of weeb shit I had to sit through years ago by watching Gurren Laggan for the first time ever a few weeks ago). Where would a brother even start to investigate GitS? I understand it's meant to be pretty fucking solid in general.

The Oshii films are very dark, blade runner like cyberpunk. Stand Alone Complex is a sci fi cop show, and personally my favorite part of the series. Arise is a dumb Hollywood action movie with bad animation consistency, not recommended for the entry point. also the manga is weird and super goofy 80s stuff so it's nothing like any of the anime.
apparently this viewing order is best: Movies: 1 Ghost in the Shell 2 Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence 3 Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG – The Laughing Man 4 Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG – Individual Eleven 5 Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex − Solid State Society Series/OVA: 1 Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2 Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG 3 Ghost in the Shell: Arise
Not seen Arise, but is it supposed to be set at the start of the canon or something? That scene where you see Motoko jump off the building in stealth camo makes it look it's going to end where the original movie starts.
