Someone FINALLY made an alternative to the super expensive official Nintendo GameCube component cable, it's even slightly better because it doesn't just output at 480i and 480p for Progressive Scan compatible games, but it also does so for AUDIO through HDMI for a third of the cost.
He also did an update on it

Can't you just get 480p Gamecube video using a Wii with the (dirt cheap) component cables?

Yes but the Wii doesn't support the Game Boy Player addon so if you want super-crisp footage of a GB/GBC/GBA game this is a better option.
"This is well designed"
*Shows picture of two PCBs sandwiched together with tape.*
The connector is designed as a prototype, and the guy is selling it as a premium project. Had the designer done something as simple as adding something to separate the pins (Something many people on forums told him countlessly before he released it), it would have been fine.
Other product designers in the gaming community (Voultar, HD Retrovision, db-electronics) talk about the issue with it here:

Please do not buy this adapter, wait for him to get his shit together (Or wait for Badassconsoles to finish his Plug and play version: http://www.badassconsoles.com/)

Sort of click baity, the adapter didn't kill his GameCube on its own in regular use, somebody knocked the console of a tv desk and it was hanging by the adapter causing a short.
The maker also apparently is offering a free "3.0" version upgrade with a better plug.

That's not the issue at all. The issue is that no connector is in the case, it's only two PCBs with the pins not even separate. Wiggling the GC enough or even plugging it in upside down (Yes, there is nothing keyed to prevent this) could cause a short of this magnitude.

The GAMECUBE HDMI ADAPTER ATE MY ASS IN MINECRAFT (NOT CLICKBAIT)

Or you know, emulator. GBA games aren't hard to run on emulators by a majority of today's hardware.

Some people just prefer using original hardware. (And yes, the Game Boy Player has the guts of a GBA in it so it's pretty much original hardware)

It is clickbaity, I agree, I just assumed everybody in this thread would actually watch the video, considering the subject matter is pretty obscure

Yeah, having a PCB just loose in the case is asking for trouble. I might buy one at a $20 price point but asking $100 for a product of this quality is bullshit. I'll wait for the other guy you linked to finish his, or for this guy to completely fix the obvious issues.
Can't say I understand why he's still supporting the designer of the product after this. It straight up destroyed the Gamecube and from what I can tell, they aren't particularly easy to get these days. It's not like he spilled water on it or something, it just took a slight yank, which is basically inevitable with a cord based system like the GC.

what do you mean gamecubes aren't easy to come by, you can find them for sale for less than 80 bucks easy lol. they're not hard to find.

I mean if you want a shitty broken one with parts missing.

Um, no, you must not ebay a lot, because I regularly see Gamecubes in good nick going for £40-£20 or less depending on what comes with it, hell even in places like Cash Generator you can usually find a cheap gamecube in relatively good nick, they certainly aren't a rarity and are still very much easily replaced if broken, the purple ones especially.
The games however are another story, those can usually retail far higher than the gamecube itself depending on the game in question, such as Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Something like that for SNES would be good, probably better quality than the SNES mini.

I passed up on a GameCube at the thrift store yesterday because I thought it was too expensive at $35. Powered up and everything.
Man, I heavily regret not buying the GCN component cables back when they were around $100. "That's too expensive for a damn cable," I thought. And now here I am ready to pony up $100 for an adapter that basically does the same thing.
My HDTV has significant input lag when upscaling 480p/480i sources, though, so I kinda wish this was an RGB or component solution instead of HDMI. Would rather use my CRT for GCN stuff.

I bought a seller-refurbished system complete with all bottom port lids for $30 shipped earlier this year. I can't imagine the value's skyrocketed that much in just a few months.
i wonder if this will change the way melee is played. If they are going to stick with CRTs or use this with nice flat screens

They'll definitely stick with CRTs. The upscaling process on HDTVs varies from model to model, but it's never zero-latency. CRTs are zero-latency.

I remember looking when those adapters were $60 on eBay and thought the exact same thing aha.
We just need someone to open source the hardware and the method of signal conversion, really. It's probably only one or two FPGAs. Could probably build it at home for around $20 or less.

Nobody is going to do it because of how much money people are willing to pay and whoever does will likely come under attack by those with similar adapters who just lost their monopoly.
I'm sure we'll eventually reach the point where these are more commonly available and from different sellers. And we need to get past technical bumps like the adapter killing the console...
That's why I'm gonna sit and wait a bit longer for this. It's only the very beginning, and has room for improvement and expansion. I'm sure I can cope with S-video for another year.
If you think the Gamecube situation is bad, the N64 is worse. If you want your 64 on your HDTV with no lag you need something called UltraHDMI, and the only way to get it is to ship your console and pay almost 200$. And all the places offering it are sold out with no ETA.
Any RCA to HDMI box will introduce lag.
I hope the interest in this thing and in the NES/SNES Classic pushes someone to look into solutions for the N64.

You can get an RGB component-out kit for around $30 tho. Considering most N64 games run at 240 or 360p, you'll probably get just as good quality as you would with an HDMI kit.
No such option for the GameCube unfortunately.
Its kind of scary how devices will slowly die out not by age, but by complete obsolescence.
There is going to be a day where HDMI will no longer be used... Display port might even become the next HDMI replaced by something similar to thunderbolt/Type C. What happens then? Not ONLY do you need either a rare older model of screen, but a converter too. God bless if you find an RGB compatible TV. And that's not even including how rare consoles could become that actually 100% work.

You still need to mod an N64 for RGB which turns people off, and 240p is ruined by HDTVs with interlacing and shitty input lag. Modding an N64 for RGB is really only fine if you're using a CRT.

now that everything's digital, you can sort of just get little adapters for the ends of cables and it'll be fine. it's not a big deal. unless we surpass digital. somehow. like if it gets to the point where we're using tiny usb-c type connectors instead of hdmi you'll be able to get a very small female hdmi to male whatever adapter and since the signal is still digital it will be completely fine. correct me if i'm wrong. but the problem here is converting an analog signal to digital which has drawbacks
