Phillip did nothing wrong.
I remember that voice... Did this guy make tutorials for the Hammer map maker for the source engine?
And as far as I can tell, he didn't even do anything wrong either. People just went "UURRRGGHHHHH HE DOESN'T MAKE MAPS THE EXACT SAME WAY AS ME?!?!?!?!?!?!"
He sorts of addresses it in this recent video. Seems like he doesn't hold any ill will towards Facepunch, what a cool guy.
Bless Phillip. It's a shame facepunch practically ran him out of here in the old days...
Facepunch kind of has a track record for that e.g. the report of the week.
Facepunch kind of has a track record for that e.g. the report of the week.
Woah what did we do to reveiwbrah? I remember him being here, but I dont remember folks being mean to him
this video seems like one of those that only need to exist for documentation purposes rather than entertainment
Even though i don't play much CSGO I still find his videos to be pretty interesting. The inner machinations of games always facinate me.
this video seems like one of those that only need to exist for documentation purposes rather than entertainment
thanks for sharing your thoughts.

People just went "UURRRGGHHHHH HE DOESN'T MAKE MAPS THE EXACT SAME WAY AS ME?!?!?!?!?!?!"
Not quite, Philip made really easy to understand tutorials, with other tutorial makers at the time taking 40 minutes filled with technical jargon and poor planning to explain something that Phil did in five. The problem is that people only watched the first ones. I.E "Here's how you make a basic map that's playable. It's very unoptimized, but considering it's just a tiny example map, that's fine, however, in the future we'll talk about how you-", the problem is that people closed their browser at that point and opened Hammer going "look im mapper :D", releasing and wanting help with monstrosities that both looked and ran like crap, which a lot of mappers (not only on FP, some of the experienced mappers on here were, although very talented, kinda spergy and elitist as hell, though) blamed Philip for. It obviously never actually was his fault, though

Seems like he doesn't hold any ill will towards Facepunch, what a cool guy.
that's a shame, his tutorials helped me out tons, and while I didn't grow up to be an ace map maker, it did give me an understanding and appreciation for the art and they were just honestly really good.
I do remember tons of people on here making fun of him when he first started out, but I don't remember anyone being an asshole directly towards him
I do, sadly it was several people. I actually got PM'd by the guy himself because I wasn't one of the people being a huge dick to him: I'll share the thanks, the rest isn't very interesting as it's full of dead links and pre-2010 posts are all archived so they're hard to dig up. Needless to say it's not the Mapping section's proudest moment.
I wish he would expand beyond CS:GO. He makes solid content. I fail to see how a game as dull and lack of any real decent mechanics such as CS still even is popular today. To each their own I guess.
is this bait
No i genuinely don't get why this game is incredibly popular. Back in the Source and 1.6 days yeah I can see why but nowadays there's so little depth to it I really do fail to see what is so special about it.
No i genuinely don't get why this game is incredibly popular. I'm not sure why, not sure how, but there are really no competitors I can think of, the closest one at the moment I can think of is Rainbow Six Siege.

It's the only currently popular/supported FPS which is in any way suitable for being played competitively. It's incredibly hard to convey just how high the skill ceiling for CS actually is.

Simplicity leads to balance which is where you get depth, not things like killstreaks and level up rewards.
Bless Phillip. It's a shame facepunch practically ran him out of here in the old days...
The mapping and modelling sections are a completely different beast from the rest of the forum. It's filled with a bunch of people who constantly make low-effort posts or beg so I'm not surprised some huge assholes were in there.
That makes me curious, how big is basketball and counter strike relative to eachother?
ELeague's Twitch channel hit 1.026 million concurrent viewers while live broadcasting the grand finals of the 10th CS:GO Major TNT, for example, averaged 1.5 million viewers, It seems that streams of CS:GO matches are starting to peak views near where basketball games are seeing their lows. Considering one is globally watched versus local American teams, it's not surprising.
Philip was shunned by and large by the entire mapping community (not just Facepunch, but including Interlopers and other more niche communities as well). His tutorials involved very crude and frankly terrible mapping techniques/advice and were played off as being the "go-to" method for mapping and were some of the first tutorials mappers would run into when starting out with Source due to their brevity. People had to go out of their way constantly to tell people to avoid Philip's tutorials because they were frankly bad. His most notorious one (that I recall anyway) involved him advocating use of a tool called "carve" in Hammer which is the equivalent of telling developers to de-optimize their game. I can't be bothered going back through all of his videos, but one of his examples of doing this (0:33): Thankfully he stopped doing this years down the line, but the damage was by and large done by that point. That's not to say I don't enjoy Philip's other content, which I do. But some of his mapping tutorials did some real damage in the community.

The combined average viewer count of all the different language streams and the TV broadcast was somewhere around 1m if I recall. Obviously not counting the Chinese viewer numbers because they're botted to fuck and back.

He didn't really give out any bad advice in that video, you're supposed to use the clipping tool
Clipping tool != Carve. He didn't really give out any bad advice in that video, you're supposed to use the clipping tool
I'm not going to get into this timeless argument again because I really couldn't care less about it at this point. The fact of the matter is that he regularly interchanged the Clipping tool and Carve tool in his tutorials, and it was called out within multiple communities. Whether you like it or not is up to you, again, I couldn't care less. His tutorials were poorly written and outdone by multiple people. You can choose to dislike the facts, but history is history. I'm simply telling you why he was looked down upon by the mapping community.
so because he interchanged words he was looked down upon? i don't think he deserves to be shunned out of a whole community for it at all

No reading 20 page on a simple thing or a 10 minute tutorial on making a brush. Just because people started making bad maps in droves doesn't mean it lies entirely on him, as soon as people who were making bad maps lost interest the rest improved and made much better maps as time went on. Those people might not even have started making maps if not for his tutorials. As for his mixup with carve and clipping, that doesn't excuse people's toxic behavior like yours towards him as seen in older threads related to 3kliksphillip. And he was mostly only looked down by elitists in the mapping community because anyone with half a brain could see that his tutorials are for absolute beginners.
and holy fuck wow some of these responses [t]https://i.imgur.com/2mOjwpV.png[/t] [t]https://i.imgur.com/G3qEgrr.png[/t] [t]https://i.imgur.com/7k8KV91.png[/t] [t]https://i.imgur.com/BzMizbX.jpg[/t] and this one is an attack on me too for even suggesting him! jesus christ I don't blame him for leaving at all
