Myself and my friends couldn't agree more with Mike on this, the only bad content in this game is that they kept this sort of power up in.
3D Land did the same thing. Sure it's a shitty way to cater to the kiddy casuals who can't handle REAL games, but the power-up is still nevertheless optional and not required.
People seem to forget that one of Nintendo's main markets is children
and like said above, it is optional
i'm pretty sure this was mentioned before, but it's optional. some players will get frustrated over a level for being too hard, and making something like this solves that. the only other thing they could've done was make a skip button. (or take the feature out altogether and probably make the game less enjoyable for children/casual gamers)

this exactly
maybe this guy should reevaluate why he is a grown man complaining about a kid's game
Actually being "optional" is kinda not a real argument for this. You all know, that every kid WILL pick this up, because why not? This guy has a point. You die 4 times, oh well, let's just "cheat" through the level. Games are suppost to be challenging at least to one extend. I had fun trying to beat games as a kid. And the trying and trying just makes it better. Yes, it is frustrating alot sometimes, but the end result is so much better after.
I died so many times in the past playing things like crash bandicoot as a kidand it WAS frustrating but eventually I got better and better at the game, learning the levels ect until I could beat it with my own skill.
kids have no right having easy wins handed to them on a silver plater this shit needs to go
People seem to forget that one of Nintendo's main markets is children

The fact that it's aimed at kids makes it worse, it's going to create a generation of gamers where "everyone's a winner" and since it's a big company, Nintendo, it won't be long before other developers pick up with shit like this, as said in the video, if you suck, you should lose and try again instead of being an impatient shit, and instead actually get some basic skill before reaching the end of the game which is supposed to be difficult.
Just seeing it on the screen is like a "fuck you, you suck, let me beat it for you" to core/hardcore gamers.
Although the voice is annoying the following video describes what i'm trying to say more accurately.

Nintendo are a mainstream developer, they want every audience to be able to access their games and they want money, so this is the easiest way of guaranteeing it.
A sorry fact but business is business. It's not like it's going to stop any of you guys from buying it.
Finally! A game suitable for DarkSydePhil.
There is a fine balance of difficulty to be set in children's videogame's.
They can't be too hard, but being too hard is better than having a mode that allows them to pass the game with zero effort.
I don't know, the game gets pretty hard near the end. If you keep losing just don't pick up the cheat-y suit.
Great game though, although maybe it could effect the younger audience by making them more spoiled.
At least the game gets actually hard, most games these days are just super easy.
Try beating Star Fox on SNES on the hard route. Lose all your lives? Start over you failure.
Ninty's been trying a lot recently with guiding players along through their games, trying to find a good balance between doing that and not being insulting.
The White Tanooki Suit is definitely the worst end of the spectrum, and I think how they handled it in the OOT 3D remake was pretty good, with the optional Shiekah stones that would only give you a sorta vague hint on where to go next in the form of a video.
Aonuma's recent statements about him having to slap the hands of the people working on Link Between Worlds in order to remove hints were very reassuring.
Never understood people who complain about how other people play games. If I want to use a cheat buff I will, if you have a problem you're free to fuck off. I get it, our generation didn't have easy modes or anything but put your peen away and let people enjoy games how they want. If you don't want the option to cheat, then don't. It's called an option for a reason.

Because, as you see, it did have impacts on game developments, if things like this power up are built in.
Because, as you see, it did have impacts on game developments, if things like this power up are built in.
It's built in if the level is hard and you don't want to replay it tens of times. If you want, you can do it just fine. If anything, such things could allow for harder levels for people who love a challenge while leading through less skilled players who are not interested in grinding the level.
Well, to give them credit, you still have to navigate through the stage (to my knowledge), and the suit only gives you immunity against enemies: you can still fail a jump and die, for example, it's not like you can moonjump or noclip with it :v:
It still feels rather cheap, though.
I've seen the white tanuki block just once in super mario 3D land when I was having some trouble getting a golden coin and I didn't use it.
On top of that the white tanuki block just didn't appear at all in the special worlds which are most of the time more difficult versions of the original worlds.
Games didn't have such stuff back then because without them being difficult they were damn short. You spent most of the time grinding instead of playing new content.

this is so bizarre. it's like weird anti liberal conservative rhetoric but applied to power ups in a video game
This guy talks about it like it destroys the game, has he ever heard of a tiny bit of self-control? It's as simple as not picking it up.
This guy talks about it like it destroys all challenge, it's as simple as not picking it up.
No but it gives other players the choice to play how they want. That's bad.
Is it just me, or does Mike Matei always ALWAYS have a rant about "how games were so much better in the nes days" in every single video game related video of his?

(Subconscious) superiority complex maybe
I mean come on, he's disgusted because the option is there and that some kid he doesn't know and will never meet might use it to pass the level.
Isn't there a disadvantage for using the white tanuki suit? Something like you can't collect green stars, or the level is only considered beaten on a technicality? Most of the "super guide" type things in other games (Mario Galaxy 2, NSMBU, DKCR) had something like that.
If there's no disadvantage to using it, that's dumb.

It would be better if it just worked like the normal tanooki suit from Super Mario Bros. 3 instead of being an invincibility suit.
Wish Superman 64 had this powerup.
Will someone explain to me how letting "the filthy casuals" play the game at reduced difficulty harms the experience for "hardcore" players? Yeah, it's an easy mode, and yeah it's more than a little cheating, but guess what: if you don't want to use it then you don't have to.

While I'm still on the fence about it the idea is basically this: the vast majority of games have been getting easier and easier since the brutal days of the NES and although that's probably a good thing a lot of games have taken it way too far. People are worried that if this trend continues (which would certainly be encouraged by mainstream games adding free win mechanics when you lose too much) that gamers on average will be so terrible basically every game will have to become like this to be successful, which would be a pretty bleak future for gaming.
My little brother talks shit to his friends when they grab the free power ups unless they're just messing around. Those bragging rights the guy in the video mentions? Still there. You're just a punk bitch if you cheat through a level. (My brother is 7.)

It doesn't harm a thing.

Also isn't it dying eight times and not five? It doesn't matter. Saying that a boost for bad players outright ruins the game is a dumb thing to say anyway.
