If you remember the first movie, he did have a son and a daughter. And the daughter in Die Hard 4 was actually a pretty cool character so the son could be cool too.

It's not really a problem of having a son/daughter, it's when they start sharing the spot of main character.
Could be done well, just that the majority of times I've seen it happen, it went pretty badly.
