the way the guy said it. dunno it sounds tasteless even to me and i'm pretty sure i'm not oversensitive, especially about misogyny and shit like that.
wow this video is not only very poignant, but also not does a very good job of showing both sides of the story and doesn't pander to male gamer's gut reactions towards being told they are wrong [editline]13th June 2013[/editline] also remember that the joke in question of "scripted!" Not a little comment but something they had put on a teleprompter and said "what could go wrong?
Was it called for? Not really, scripted or not. Are people slightly overreacting? Yes.
Am I the only one who sees "Just let it happen, it'll be over soon." as a way of saying "Just give up. Let me finish kicking your ass real quick."? [editline]13th June 2013[/editline] I think people are looking way too much into his words.

It was not a rape joke, it was just a joke. The people who thought of it as a rape joke and complained about it, and the ones who continued to bitch about it are oversensitive children who looked too far into a kind of joke that gets thrown around by friends, casually, all day every day.
i think it's the fact that she was hopelessly outmatched and he said just let it happen alluded to it in some people's minds. it did with me. people can have their own opinions about things, regardless of the original intention. but then again i just think it's in poor taste. i don't think someone needs to be strung up by their balls.

[editline]13th June 2013[/editline] I think people are looking way too much into his words.
Of course that's probably what he intended but the phrase "Just let it happen, it will be over soon" is an immediate metaphor for rape in most mediums I come across. I immediately thought it was a unintentional rape reference when I heard it even before I read anything from anywhere. Do I think it was a horrible thing to say, yes. Do I think he knew what he was saying, nope.
Even if it were a rape joke, I still wouldn't get the fuss. I don't see anyone complain when you make a murder joke.
Even if it were a rape joke, I still wouldn't get the fuss. I don't see anyone complain when you make a murder joke.
hipster brand feminism for ya.
Even if it were a rape joke, I still wouldn't get the fuss. I don't see anyone complain when you make a murder joke.
I'm sure no one actually makes murder jokes at E3
wtf. it wasn't casual banter. it was SCRIPTED.
you realize that only makes it worse right?
wtf. it wasn't casual banter. it was SCRIPTED.
Then how in the fuck did they think that was ok to say. Regardless of what whether it was meant as it or not, it can be construed as it and that just means the MS team did not think hard enough about it.
the MS team doesn't seem to be thinking hard about anything
my guess is that it was either -a disgruntled employee who figured "fuck it" and wrote it into the script -a clueless intern who didn't realize the implications of what he was doing
I assume the latter since doing the former would be suicidal in the almost literal sense. He would never get hired anywhere ever again.
I'm surprised there's any actual discussion about this. I just can't fathom how this relates to rape in anyway. I mean "just let it happen, it'll all be over soon" can relate to a thousand different things. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the last thing my dentist told me before I had a tooth removed
yeah that's because of what you've been exposed to in media. [editline]12th June 2013[/editline] that's why they call it subjectivity...
I'm surprised there's any actual discussion about this. I just can't fathom how this relates to rape in anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the last thing my dentist told me before I had a tooth removed
This really is the only answer to this piss poor excuse of a "discussion," anyone who over thought this and concluded that it was a rape joke should really look at themselves. It's like pulling the race card when someone wasn't even referring to race. If anyone automatically thought "This is a rape joke, I am offended," then those people must be the ones who were just waiting for anything remotely related to rape to come up.
you realize that only makes it worse right?
THAT'S MY POINT [editline]13th June 2013[/editline]
You sound dare I say it, oversensitive.
I'm not trying to take sides, but to completely disregard the other side, completely brushing anything they have to say away by using "oversensitive" as an argument, is incredibly ignorant.
I like to imagine what would happen if they had accurately depicted "casual banter" amongst gamers
Then how in the fuck did they think that was ok to say. Every E3 photos circulate showing this.
Scripted or not, you are thinking way too far into it. It was not a rape joke. It was a joke.
It doesn't matter what I read into it. it was something that can so easily be misconstrued as a rape joke and it was incredibly risky to say. This isn't a matter of freedom of speech as I don't care about the joke, I care about who thought it was a good idea to put it into the script at a convention.

Of course, it could be misinterpreted as a rape joke, and it might have possibly been risky to say, but that's only because you've already seen the outcome of this nonsensical controversy. You are getting way too worked up over a joke that has nothing to do with rape, and you're looking for a reason to be mad about it because you believe that it has everything to do with rape.
I honestly didn't even know what the rape joke was until I saw this video.
If you leave FP and /vg/ you actually see this cropping up a lot and generally the most optimistic reaction is "Wow that was a really weird thing to say". I don't think he should be fired or punished in any way because I'm 99.98% sure it wasn't meant to be a reference to rape, but I do think that next time that guy or whoever wrote the script should be a little bit more aware of the things they say or write.
This doesn't mean anything really because people reacted immediately after he said that when there was no controversy. Also it's pretty condescending to say that the only reason one would think something was weird or risky to say is because other people think the same way and they are just jumping on a bandwagon. I was watching the Microsoft stream live and the second he said that I knew someone would bring it up because it was such an obviously stupid example of trashtalk when you are demoing a game to hundreds of thousands of people.
Wtf, there is no implication of rape in the sentence "just let it happen, it will be over soon". All you guys sayings it's a rape joke are making the joke into a rape joke in your own minds, and then accusing him of being in bad taste. If so, you are the ones in bad taste. The joke is very "universal", and it could very vell be used in a rape setting too, but come on, jeez. Sort of silly, as there is no link to rape in simply saying "just let it happen". It could be anything, as in "JUST LET ME KICK YOUR ASS, IT WILL BE OVER SOON", (as he probably meant, if you, i dunno, LOOK AT THE FUCKIN SETTING he is in?!). It's just all these silly drama gamers (the kind who still watch television for retards and complain about shit in CoD, and twitter about shit no-one cares about) trying to do what they love best, making some drama and spittin some hate on everything. stupidest shit i ever saw this week
