it's often viewed as repetitive because of the whole mining part of it and most people who don't play see it as "put block down pick block up tedium"

There was an article a while back about how autistic kids were using minecraft as an artistic medium for themselves, and they were having fun with it, so then idiots who didn't understand, or weren't willing to take the time to figure the game out, just made fun of everyone that played it or put significant amounts of time into it as being autistic.

Because everything can be made neat and orderly, and there is the possibility of putting enormous amounts of time and effort into doing certain things (like this, or even worse the 16-bit ALU) and people with Aspergers usually have one thing they obsess over (in this case, Minecraft).
