I know what good animation looks like.
All anime is bad animation, might as well be looking at a flip book or something.

The animation for that Naruto fight is really good, but boy does it make good out-of-context fodder.

it's a really neat piece of experimental animation but a highly-anticipated scene in naruto of all things probably wasn't the best place for it. the animator behind the most controversial cuts in that scene has very similar stuff in birdy the mighty that people don't complain about. i admire the balls the guy had to do it that way though

Tbh at this point of Anime's popularity in the West, I can't help but feel that comments like these are more likely trolls than someone actually being this ignorant.
I like hentai does that count

Never underestimate the small but extremely vocal number of people who whine about anime constantly.
All anybody who subscribes to the "anime is trash" bandwagon is doing is cheating themselves out of a potentially enormous of shows and movies that they would like that they are deliberately ignoring so they can feel superior for complaining about Japanese cartoons based on dumb preconceptions and willing ignorance.
If you think all anime sucks then all you need to do is stop watching bad anime. The "anime is trash, no i haven't watched any anime, i don't watch it because i know that it's trash" circular argument is stupid. And hey, if you still don't like it afterwards at least you're no longer talking out of your ass.

It really is the dumbest thing. A lot of people who constantly shit talk anime have never even seen one, or maybe they sat down and watched some shit that's not even good or that they knew they wouldn't like once, and they concluded yes, all the 4chan memes about anime being trash are real and I should take them seriously.
I know weaboos are obnoxious but hating an entire art medium because weaboos exist is, y'know, stupid. I don't hate movies because some people act obnoxious in movie theatres.
I'm a real sucker for animation. It's a great medium as you can do literally anything you want and not have it look out of place compared to live-action and cgi. Not to mention there are camera angles, characters, crazy sequences, and expressions you just can't do in a traditional live-action show show.
Half the reason I like anime is because there are mature shows with actual plot and story. They also cover a wide variety of subjects, so there's something for everyone. (there's an anime for every sport) In the west animation has been branded as "something for kids" and "grown men should only watch sports and other ~real~ shows." And due to that, there aren't really any animated adult shows in the west that aren't comedy, which kind of saddens me.

Most people haven't seen any anime outside of stuff like Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, and so on. Then you encounter weaboos who either are A) obsessively into these relatively bad / unapproachable shows, to an unhealthy degree or B) obsessively into niche slice of life anime about little girls.
It's not exactly an approachable medium to pick and enjoy, since you could easily want to distance yourself from the terrible, terrible fan-bases of a lot of anime.
That said, I finished Cowboy Bebop recently and it was very good, so I'd recommend Canary takes a look at that. It's gorgeous and has great musical direction.

It's not unapproachable unless you're picking out the worst of any given fanbase to take advice from.
I can name a ton of basic entry-level shows just off the top of my head that I think are accessible and any casual viewer who hasn't watched any anime before would easily get into before you even get into anything resembling niche. And "niche" doesn't mean "moe-centric slice of life garbage".
Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Sword of the Stranger, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Death Parade, Baccano!, almost any Ghibli film...all of those are exceptionally good anime. Even if you don't like anime there is a pretty damn good chance you'll like those because it's not about being an anime, it's about being an exceptional piece of media.
People who just hate "anime" are dumb.

I agree with you, I'm trying to say that (anecdotally at least) in a lot of cases people are introduced to anime by something similar to a smelly fellow in the back of class with a cat girl messenger bag, though I'd assume less so as it enters the mainstream more and more. I agree that you can enjoy plenty of anime if you can enjoy most other television. I simply think it's a little excusable for people to have a distaste for anime if they've only interacted with the worst of the worst.
On the other hand, people with vocal hatred tend to be kids or immature, I think. If they've been shown shows that are generally accepted as very good, that's on them to blindly hate it still.

Fan bases can quickly and efficiently ruin things for others, as much as it makes you want to smack your head against a wall. Look at UNDERTALE. I played it before the insane hype explosion and I fully believe I'd be very weary it was some dumb meme-y game if I hadn't. Perhaps not to the extent that I would complain about it, but I've spoken with people who have looked at me like I was crazy for saying I enjoyed it. :v:

Just like how cartoons are widely varied and we've got anything from The Simpsons to Gravity Falls to Spongebob, anime can be much the same. But the modern moe trends and the cancerous communities around popular shonen series don't help, and even professionally both regions of animation still get discriminated against and snubbed on a global level by film and television.

The problem I have with most anime is the exorbitant amount of exposition that they have. I watched Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Gurren Lagaan, FLCL, and a couple others that I forget, and it's annoying to me that even with such an open and expressive medium as animation, all these shows/movies still have to rely on a motionless character explaining the situation/backstory for 5 minutes instead of just showing it instead. "Show, don't tell" etc etc. Not that this makes these shows bad (I actually love FLCL because it avoids this most of the time) and I know a lot of it has to do with budget constraints, but it's a grievance that I have because every anime I've seen does it.
Except Ghibli movies because they're masters at what they do
talking about VERY bad anime animation

Yeeeeaah...
i think fans have every right to complain about that one gurren lagann episode, it's a total shift in art direction and even in motion it doesn't look "as good" as the rest of the series.

came in here to post this tbh
the, "it's just art style!!!" defence doesn't work if the change was so noticeable and jarring that viewers are asking what the hell happened
even if the art style was very good, it's probably not a good idea to take your existing, somewhat established art style and shift it to a very stylized one mid season for a single episode
everything else in the video, I agree with, but that gl episode was a pretty big mistake - it shouldn't have been done

This doesn't look like bad animation to me, it looks like animation that doesn't fit with the style of Naruto... which tbh is just generic anime animation.

you gotta throw a lot more framerate at it to get away with that kind of stuff imo. the extreme closeups don't easily mesh well with such an exaggerated style at such a low framerate. also doesn't help that the color palette is shit
that video does do a good job demonstrating how important sound design is though

The issue with the 4th episode was that it just sucked in pretty much every aspect. The animation was objectively shittier and less emotive than the other episodes, the writing felt worse since it literally ends with the MC eating ass to win or some shit. The only redeeming factors it has is that it introduces a good character.

I feel that the problem with that fight (especially Pain's roar/punch part) was that it seems like it's a large number of smear frames in sequence, rather than reserving them for in between the fast-moving parts, they're used in every part of the scene which makes it look jarring.
For actual bad animation, present day One Piece hits the bill pretty well. Dressrosa Arc was just absolutely awful to watch.

The worst part about One Piece is the lack of animation and just how egregiously long and boring each episode is paced. I'd say you could read one chapter of One Piece for five minutes at max, the corresponding episode will likely take more than 4 times that and will go beyond one episode. One Piece is infinitely better in the manga than what can be called animated television.
I feel like Good anime is really hard to find. I'm always intrigued with the ideas of a lot of anime but I always end up turned off by either the annoying characters, terrible character designs(and the whole fan service culture), and the story structure seems to fall flat always. I'd really like to find more animes I'm into but it's hard to get invested in what feels really cheesy Most of the time.
I feel like Western media is better at portraying believable emotion, and I wish there were more crossovers of anime through western studios.

The worst animation has no grasp of perspective.
I thought the video was going to begin when it ended. I was expecting him to actually tell in detail about the stylistic techniques people mistake for bad and the artists who use them.
Is there somewhere else I could learn from particular artistic styles?
