NASA actually did something similar in the early 60's when they were experimenting with lifting body aircraft that could be used as future re-usable space vehicles. The data gathered from this research program was eventually used to design the Space Shuttle. They towed the wingless M2-F1 behind a convertible Pontiac Catalina at speeds reaching 100 miles per hour, allowing for around 20 seconds of glide time, which is enough to simulate wingless landings and test the avionics.
