Do you still remember the feel of fast?
Do you still remember the feel of fast?
i will never forget my first fatcap or Thumper air-to-air
Hitscan scrubs ruined the game
Informative video! Odd Mic quality though.
Tribes was a huge love of mine, I have 300 hours in the steam version alone and it was sad to see it fade out in the way it did.
You could easily give an hour long video about the short history that happened while the game was active. It had its ups and downs but overall it was one of the most original shooters to date. Refreshing, skill based and had a stupid amount of character with the VGS system as well as vehemently defending whatever faction they chose to support (Blood Eagle being the superior one of course)
If you have the time and never got to see what Tribes was like when the gameplay shined immensely, check this video out. The Reddit team was a bunch of semi-pro players who planned quite extensively for the match, while the /v/ crowd was literally pulled off the thread a few hours before the match started.

Things get interesting after the first two matches.
Idk, Tribes is a part of my gaming experience I don't think I'll ever get to experience again, there was nothing like the sweltering summers playing this game in my tiny ass bedroom just going super fast and wrecking shit.
Midair looks interesting. I'll have to check it out OP. Thanks.
Man, I remember upgrading my pc just so I could play this, I'm super glad you posted this I had no idea about Midair and it looks great
Thanks and great video!
Honestly I am just really desperate for a new Tribes type game. I hope Midair succeeds, even if it doesn't have a million players as long as it is big enough to sustain itself and update I will be happy. It's a horrible feeling having an amazing gaming experience and realizing you will likely never feel it again and if Midair has even just a hope of bringing back that old feeling then I think that makes it worth talking about. Of course if we are lucky an actual youtuber (as in having a sub count 100 times that of mine) will make a video about it since these days a game can live or die based on if the right people talk about it.

A few people said the music was too loud so I reuploaded it with that tweaked a bit.
My main issue was how often they tweaked things to try to fix problems that weren't really there at higher levels of play, especially in regards to vehicles. New players just didn't know how to counter them so they kept being nerfed to the point of uselessness, and it didn't matter because on public servers people still wouldn't bother trying to shoot down a shrike unless they were a doombringer despite them being made of paper.

I had an SSD when they were new, and for months I could load in faster than everyone else and be most of the way back to base before the other team loaded in. Finally they added a warmup period to counter that, but it took them way too long to fix something so broken.

Looks like Hirez is making a game called "Tribes Royale" I just pray that the "Royale" part doesn't refer to it being a PUBG style game.

How would that even work? Tribes is about capping flags, not death match.
Someone pointed me to http://www.playnovakin.com/portal/ There is no gameplay footage yet though but it is also trying to be an FPZ like Tribes.

Probably the same way Fortnite did, which was to just jam it in for the sake of it.

I think that could actually be pretty good.
But it's quite a gamble, it's likely that hi-rez will fuck it up unfortunately.

I've got so many happy memories from T:A. No game deserves to die the way that it die, especially with the potential that it had and the community backing it.
I will never stop missing Tribes.
[editline]26th November 2017[/editline]
It's definitely one of those "you had to be there" type of games and like the heyday of the classic Battlefield games (1942 and 2) or Halo, I'm sad that people who missed it will never be able to experience it the same way. It was such a great game and community.

Yeah. A lot of people say "Why not just play Tribes? It's not gone". This is true and I still do play it every now and then but playing with the exact same people every time and knowing there wont be any more balance fixes or content updates really takes away a lot of the fun.
Tribes 2 is still the best in the series imo. I grew up playing the demo version.

The command circuit in T2 is still one of the coolest things I've ever seen in a multiplayer shooter. I can understand why they got rid of it for Ascend in favor of a more streamlined easier to pick up game, but I still missed it.
The video doesn't mention anything about all the updates that came out around 2015 that rebalanced the game (merged classes, reworked/replaced weapons, maps and vehicles, etc.) that was made with player feedback, and also implies that Smite was the reason why Tribes died (even though there is lots of information about how things actually were everywhere now) And that it was a game that was an instant success without any effort (you only need to take a glance at the forums or the subreddit to see just how eager the community is to complain about the smallest of things or to demand free premium content. Blind zealots are a rarity in the game, for good and bad). I don't know if you were intentionally trying to keep on spreading misinformation or if you don't really know of these things, but its always a good idea to do some research when making this type of videos.
Even with all the bollocks, Tribes Ascend was one of the most fun games I ever played, and it only ever felt a few steps away from being a perfect game. It's heartbreaking how Hi-Rez had a beautiful game with a lovely fanbase and then let it all go for Smite. Whilst the 2015 update was what the game needed, it came far too late, and unfortunately the game is pretty much dead at this point.
Nothing has filled the hole that Tribes Ascend left. After all the deception, broken promises, and money grabbing, there's no way I could trust Hi-Rez & Todd Harris again. At least MidAir may become a thing.
Tribes never did well enough to be profitable and the "lovely fanbase" was just a lot of people who spent more time posting memes on the internet than actually playing the game. Tribes didn't die because of smite, it died because of poor development choices from Hi-Rez and because it never did good enough in the first place. But you already know this.
Imma just go ahead and post a link to this thread from the news section: https://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1584605
I'm still hoping that someone will bother to explain what causes people in FP to be literally insane over Tribes and Hi-Rez. You don't really see this kind of stuff when other dead games are brought up. This goes beyond mere "I liked this game and I'm sad" (it's been almost half a decade and the grudge seems to grow with each year). I swear it feels almost like a weird inside joke or a hidden camera prank, like it can't be real.

Considering all the titles that have come out after Tribes (that people like to pretend they don't exist for some reason) are still doing pretty well (well enough at least). Maybe, just maybe they learned a thing or two of their failures. (It might still fail because there is already a lot of battle royale games out there tho)
RIP those 40-killstreaks as HOF; with mines, energy walls, the saber launcher and that perk that caused anyone that collided with you to take damage, you could lock down CTF games for the whole match without a death. Shit was broke but it was so much fun.
I'm pretty sad I missed the Tribes Ascend Train, I saw it a lot but it came out around a time I was kinda over FPSes in general.
the screenshot at 2:19 made me dead inside
It came out at a time when all the viable MP FPS games on the market were either TF2 wannabes, CoD clones, and flavour of the month games - its core gameplay was innovative and fun, and there was a ton of ways in which any player could easily influence the outcome of a game. It was unique to everything else at the time, it was accessible to anyone of any skill, and it ultimately felt great to play.
There's a certain je nes se quoi about how it felt to play the game as a whole, but it was just that fun that it left a massive mark on the majority of players. And it was just sad to see it essentially dropped for something which seemed to be simply cashing in on the MOBA craze.
I'm sure someone could explain it better than me, but at the end of the day it was a satisfying chill game which I loved and I'm sad to see it go.
I get there is people who realy loved the game and are sad they can't enjoy it the same way they did before, but it doesn't really explain this thing where people can't give up on the grudge to the point they don't even want to know what happened, or what's going on (like one person in these forums who actually thought smite had died years ago). That isn't love, that's something else. It's like people want to be upset forever to the point they make up reasons to be. This did not happen with Dawngate, this didn't happen with other games that had loyal yet "not big enough" fanbases, but it did with this one. That is what I don't understand. You Don't see this kind of negative reactions when it's about other games or companies, I want to know the why but at this point I'm pretty sure not even the people who are still upset know.
Starsiege Tribes was, I believe, my first PC game. And I loved the hell out of it. Especially with all the modded servers- there was one called ModX and it was basically Garry's Mod in Tribes.

Pardon the music. Not my video, but it had a slide in it- and fuck, slides were awesome.

Same! I was big into playing on ModX when I was 9, I even met the creator on the server once.

T2 Construct was great too.
Just in case you didn't know, there is an official website with most of the tribes games up for download (though I'm not sure if they all work on modern OS): https://www.tribesuniverse.com/
I can't believe it's been 5 years already

By the time that happened the game was dead for over two years and the update barely brought any players back. Its not like Hirez came back to save the day, just 2 or so devs that felt bad about how poorly they treated the game decided to give it a small update. It was more of a "sorry" then it was a comeback.

That's because Tribez was an extremely unique game/series that hi-rez messed up badly in such a small amount of time. The reason the game didn't make money was because the company made so many bad decisions and then abandoned the game after they screwed up instead of fixing it.
