They allow a thread of silk to drift and catch on something, then they tie it securely and continue from there.

Most spiders usually take about an hour to finish their web, and they will eat it after use before beginning a new one the following day. At least, that's what orb-weavers like these ones do.
Why do they eat it? Does it recycle the materials?
