My great grandfather was at dunkirk. He got blown up off two seperate boats and ended up in a german field hospital. One night he just got out of his bed and fucked off and the guards supposedly looked the other way. It kinda makes me wonder if he'd have liked the film.
Oh hey, that's my city.
Wish news lady would quit interrupting him, especially because her voice is 80 decibels louder than his.
"As human beings, we're so intelligent, we can fly to the moon... but, we still do stupid things..."
If ever there were a truer, more pure statement.

Not related to Dunkirk but to WW2; reminds me of my bosses dad, my boss is German and his father was in the Wehrmacht on the eastern front. and I think in 44' or 45' after surviving a artillery barrage that killed most of his platoon he just thought to himself "fuck this I'm going home" and legitimately walked all the way back to Germany.

To be fair what else would you expect him to do, wait to get thrown in a POW camp?

Some distant relative of mine on my mother's side walked all the way back to Hungary from the Eastern Front, and went home to his mother before reporting in.
Ended up executed for desertion.
I think because he deserted at the point where Germany was fucked so he escaped prosecution.
This is incredible. Stuff like this should be archived.

Funnily enough my other great grand father went AWOL in Canada so these things have a way of balancing out.

God damn, he could have been killed if he went in too early, killed if he went in too late
it was a pretty good film too
i enjoyed it quite a bit
When he spoke of the movie bringing up memories of his friends, I teared up a bit.
A man that his lived through the worst of Europe's history, seeing it rebuild, marveling at the technologies that sprung up from the war, to ultimately sitting in a cinema and watching it all unfold again. Then seeing him talk about it, it really hits you hard.
He really seems like a sweet person, I hope the movie didn't give him too much stress.
I saw the film and quite enjoyed it, though there's a lot of hubbub here in the Indian media talking about the conspicuous absence of Indian soldiers who also served in Dunkirk. Wonder Woman surprisingly did it quite nicely (as did Battlefield 1) so many were a little disappointed to not see any of the same here.
Yes, there were 4 companies of Indian Mule Drivers (So anywhere from 400-1000 men total) at Dunkirk, but besides that British colonial representation on the Beach was scarce. The French had many, many more colonial troops (10 Colonial Regiments, so between 10,000 and 20,000 men), which it was nice to see them appear.
