Damn this looks great
[T]http://i.imgur.com/wP6tyMW.png[/T] Her head to body ratio is fucky
It's like they half tried to go for that cartoony CivRev vibe but at the same time tried to make it a bit more realistic and ended up with a weird uncanny valley type thing. Not saying it's realistic, but its at a point between stylisation and seriousness that's kinda unsettling.
I really do love the art style of this game. It looks so clean and easy on the eyes which is not what I can say about Civ5. Really helps considering you play these games for hours on end.
Goddamn I cannot stand looking at this game. The UI in particular is really really ugly, everything has gradients behind it for some reason. Those stupid comic book BLAM animations on the combat are just laughable. The psuedo-cartoony leaders are not good at all, everything looks like HD civ 4, which looked awful. I'll stick with Civ5 unless there's a good total graphics overhaul.
I think the art style change was for the best. It looks like it goes hand in hand with the game play change. Yeah, I much prefered the art style of V, but meh, this looks good and clean enough that I won't be bothered by it and it looks vastly more functional for the design style they want for this. The leaders themselves being cartoon like is a weird decision but I actually like it
was never a fan of civ 5's muddy graphics coming from civ 4. this looks really clean and easy on the eyes, bright colors that pop out of you, clear resource distinctions, everything looks good.
Civ V has this timeless painted look, so no matter how much the graphics end up dated, the game keeps looking nice. Not so with this look, it seems intentionally cartoony. However, I like the idea of districts and the way unexplored territory looks.
it isnt really timeless when you zoom in and see how low quality everything is. [t]http://i.imgur.com/N5AA9Ao.jpg[/t] and yes, it is intentionally cartoony, to show off everything easily and clearly.

Civ 5 showed off everything clearly without degrading to super cartoony oversaturation.
The game isn't played at that zoom level, the low res textures are barely an issue in gameplay. Civ 5 showed off everything clearly without degrading to super cartoony oversaturation.
alright but I think the new art style will work better for the new gameplay
alright but I think the new art style will work better for the new gameplay
My problem is that the tone is totally gone from civ5. Its now some lighthearted mobile boardgame rather than a grand historical boardgame.

I don't understand how it looks muddy. Just because it doesn't have 200% saturation doesn't make it bad. Yea, if you have all the icons on the ui can get crowded, but the actual map being crowded is just a result of developing all the hexes.
I acknowledge that the painted look is busy and blurry. I just wish it did not take a complete rethink of design in order to fix those two issues.
"We must choose the site of our next city carefully" Settles next to bananas
Cartoony is an interesting direction to take it, and I completely get why they did it. Certain aspects of the game really benefit from the art direction, because it allows them to exaggerate certain features. For instance, in Civ V, it was sometimes hard to tell when a tile was both a forest and a hill at a glance, but the way they represent forests now, with bigger tress instead of more trees, is less obstructive of the tile but still clearly a forest, making hills underneath more visible. Given the design decisions they've made regarding AI and making their goals more clear, I'd argue a big reason for the push to this art style is so they can exaggerate the leaders to give them more personality without it looking completely out of place, ideally making their goals more clear. Looking at the modern cities at the end of the video, they honestly look incredible. I can't imagine how they could possibly pull that off in Civ V: Nothing popped out much in that game, because if it did it wouldn't fit the style: This severely limited what they could do in terms of making the cities or wonders look how they wanted. Given the intended aesthetic of the game - to make the player truly feel like it is their great civilization they are building - they probably want to show more of the players achievements in a more meaningful way. What with the addition of districts, there is more of a need than ever before to show the player more detail to not only distinguish the districts, but to show the player how far they've come.
Shame he didn't get to let his native accent out a bit more. There's never enough Yorkshire accents in media.
I wish they would've found a combination between the two, the cleanness of civ6 but the wordly feel of civ5. What does the guy at the end mean with a 'new chapter' though? I can't imagine civilization on multiple planets but how cool would that be.

As much as I like the new style this is an unfair comparison.

i much prefer the looks of civ6 to 5
civ 5 was ugly as heck
i wonder when sean bean's narrator will die furthermore, who takes over?
I was sceptical about the artstyle from the screenshots but the gameplay has convinced me that it's beautiful
I am slightly saddened at how units have less people in them. But, I think its cool that monuments have to take up their own tile.
