That'd make a lot more sense than some of the rumours I heard going around - I think one source was saying that youtube was demonitizing videos that had swearing in them but honestly what Ethan's laid out here seems a lot more likely.
they pulled a Valve on youtubers
Abusing tags should be made offense that lands a strike or even closes the channel, I mean I love watching some videos and then get recommended rape, gore and all this wacky cool shit.
We have a thread for h3h3 videos.
Yeah, but this aint no normal h3h3 video, this is important information to a current event.
This isn't exactly the stance I expected him to take. Maybe it's just how I am interpreting it, though, it seems as if he's saying "just accept it; censor yourself in your video titles and tags." I know he isn't saying creators should censor content, but suggesting that people should title their videos differently is a bit strange, since the title is the most important part of the video, it's supposed to use whatever words are relevant to the topic to catch your attention. People shouldn't have to leave out parts of the title if that is what the video content is about out of fear of not making money on their time and effort.

Nobody is going to take the time to watch the video and see what it's all about when you can just create an algorithm that detects when people tag their videos as rape and such.
If this is the case, Kurzgesagt's nuclear video's demonetization probably has nothing to do with nuclear - it's because ONE of his tags in the video is "death". This is fucked up. It's even more fucked up because it's an easily abusable system - someone can easily monetize an actual distasteful video that's, for example, pro-rape, or mocks actual death incidents. All they have to do is be vague in their descriptions and not mention any controversial words. For example - regarding mocking actual death incident - you could simply title it "Laughing at others' misfortune" or "HILARIOUS CLIPS - BAD LUCK OR DARWINISM?" <- the latter is still clickbaity enough to draw views, and the algorithm won't find anything controversial.

Someone advertising their product has every right to have control over where their money is going, and there are plenty of reasons for someone advertising their product to not want it advertised on programs with mature subject matter. Also, all this new 'system' did was add a button notifying you of why you aren't receiving as much ad revenue and how to fix it. As Ethan said in the video, it's been like this for a while sans the notification. Your point about people getting around it doesn't make it more "fucked" either, because it's quite normal and easy for people to find ways around word filters.
they pulled a Valve on youtubers
What does this even MEAN.
What does this even MEAN.
I assume they're referring to the fact Valve reiterated their returns policy (in regards to no man's sky) but didn't actually change anything which is pretty much what Youtube just did.
I'm glad Ethan had previous experience on this and was able to pinpoint the problem- so many people are still going "Goddamn Youtube, trying to appeal to kids and taking down every video with swearing and controversial topics" despite that not being case. Of course, its all youtube's fault they had no preapproved message before this happened, but either way I hope people calm down about it.
What does this even MEAN.
Best I can guess is Valve often has disastrously bad support.
Correct. This is what YouTube has been saying; the ToS have not changed. DeFranco and others just thought they did and made knee jerk reaction videos (tip DeFrano's video was titled "YOUTUBE IS SHUTTING DOWN MY CHANNEL" which even he knew to be completely false). In fact their videos were flagged when they were uploaded. Now creators are just told about it and have a chance to appeal where they didn't before. Granted the wording of the ToS is weird and Orwellian but fact is this is still the same system it was 2 years ago (or longer). Arguably the thing that changed is for the better since creators are notified and can appeal. Granted I still disagree with the ToS but whatever.
The biggest problem is that it's still not very clear what makes a video "bad for advertisers" in youtubes eyes because it's all based on words and tags and such. DeFranco's second video goes into it a bit more because he's gotten some appealed and others not, and it really shows how bad the system is because it immediately affects certain content, and this whole manual appeal thing is going to blow gas back at youtube once they realize that trying to manually do anything like this constantly and consistently will be impossible for them, as it has been for years with their copyright system. i understand their point but news and press channels are going to be fucked over by an algorithm because they'll use stuff like death, war, or bomb in their tags and descriptions, even though it's not promoting any of those actions. the algorithim isn't even consistent and it's kinda bullshit when your chances of making a video and actually getting paid for it are up to a roll of the dice, with rules that are still incredibly vague. did people's reactions go overboard? yeah. but are all of the problems solved? absolutely not, i've never trusted youtube's robots or their "manual override" to solve problems considering they're absolutely garbage at responding to people and in a couple months once this all blows over they'll probably stop putting as much effort into properly or quickly responding to people's appeals, after you've already lost the money. [editline]1st September 2016[/editline] they have a right to do this but I wouldn't trust youtube after how fucked up their other systems have been in the past. too many people have been burnt too many times for that to happen.
