I feel that if they watched the previous two films, they would have enjoyed it more.
But honestly, probably not much more since I personally feel that the Scorch Trials is the weakest of the films, and messes up the plot in DC.

The books are obviously better but these are just fun to watch.

My father and I watched Scorch Trials in theatres on a whim (I was back in town at the time).

We didn't realize that it was a sequel to a film.

Outside of not knowing what connections the main characters had with each other, and the events that the first 20 minutes of the film reference, it was actually surprisingly easy to just pick up and figure out what was going on.

My father and I actually rather enjoyed the film.

We then later watched the first film, and honestly, I have to say I think I liked Scorch Trials more. But then I'm sure the fact that was my first exposure to the series has a lot to do with that. :v:
