-snip- Reloaded page and got what I wanted.
I haven't been this excited since Star Trek: Voyager. I can't wait to get into this once I get cable television :v:
So I'm confused. Everyones jumping on the hype train for the star trek spoof, and not the actual star trek show? As someone who hasn't seen either, could people explain why?
So I'm confused. Everyones jumping on the hype train for the star trek spoof, and not the actual star trek show? As someone who hasn't seen either, could people explain why?
the star trek spoof is more star trek than actual star trek
It's like an Adult-Swim TNG parody, but I don't hate it. It's got the melodrama, musical crescendo's when someone drops some DRAMA right before the commercial break, and some MacFarlane humor peppered in there. I probably like it a touch more than Discovery at the time of typing this.

It seems like its waaaay more violence and action oriented. The first real thing I've heard out of it from my perspective was stuff like "How Sonequa Martin-Green became the first black lead of Star Trek" and having an openly gay character When even when you're just talking Star Trek none of this shit even remotely impresses me at all But when people talk about Orville they talk about it being STAR TREK in the raw.

It tends to be a very on-the-nose joke followed up by another joke to make you see how funny the first joke was. It's like a one-two punch by someone that has muscle atrophy. What I found a bit off-putting is that he wants a really positive world, but then in one of the episodes you find out that humans still circumcise babies. The dialogue is even with a doctor that thinks its a not life altering procedure.

The jokes are distracting but bearable imo, as long as they don't increase their frequency. I also think the "humor" is more or less required for the show to be considered a parody. Without it, it would stop being a parody (instead being essentially a star trek clone) and it wouldn't be covered by fair use copyright laws anymore. They don't use any of the star trek universe terms or designs, but I think that could still be a problem (So yeah, there actually might be a sort of "joke quota").

everything i've heard about the orville so far seems like it could really use a genre shift
everything i've heard about the orville so far seems like it could really use a genre shift
Na just better marketers, they trailered it entirely wrong.

Does Sisko not count or something?
What garbage click-bait websites are claiming this? Does Sisko not count or something?
the Independant
Star Trek pioneered diversity long before diversity was a hot-button issue. When the series first launched 51 years ago, its original crew featured black, Asian and, yes, females actors – not merely as eye candy – among its cast. But an all-new reboot, Star Trek: Discovery, goes boldly where no Trek has gone before by placing two women of colour in command of a starship: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon actress Michelle Yeoh and Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green.
the amazing thing is that they aren't in command of anything, as far as I know? [editline]5th October 2017[/editline] We don't exactly live in the mid 1900's so its not really that wild of a thing if this was 1960-80 I'd so be all over this

Actually isn't bad. I just watched the first episode and I really enjoyed it. My only issue is that they use the same stock sounds Doom did for doors opening/closing, so whenever I hear a door I start thinking about Doom instead of the show itself.
