Sleeping at wheel while using Tesla's Autopilot in traffic

Probably not the best idea. The car will eventually put it's hazards on and gradually slow to a stop if you don't respond to its alerts but it could potentially go on for quite awhile.
Haha I honestly can't wait for it to be safe enough to do this regularly.
Thing is, if you keep a hand on the wheel while sleeping on the wheel, the tesla will just keep going. If it finds too many hazards it starts beeping and pointing out that it's going to slow down to a crawl, which should wake you up.
It's pretty cool
If they made it safe and legal to sleep like that, it would be worth so goddamn much. There's no feature that can beat taking a nap on your way home after work.

Getting the train home is great cause you can just sleep and relax. Bus would be nice too but they're too fucking noisy.
I don't see the big deal with him having a nap when he's clearly stuck in traffic. They're on a motorway but they're moving at a crawl due to traffic. I'd probably nap and leave my car in control as well. It's not like he's cruising down the motorway at 120kmh whilst asleep at the wheel.

Sure, until the traffic clears up and the autopilot starts driving the speed limit.

only thing preventing me from sleeping on the train is the fear ill miss the station
i love the sound of trains and unfortunately, the announcer's voice is really nice so i just conk out to that
last thing i wanna do is wake up at terminus and have to frantically find the next train to the station where i parked my car
What if it's a heart attack?

This would be so nice. Rest your eyes for a good 15-20 minutes and wake up as your car is pulling into your parking spot.

Nothing to even worry about as the Tesla's built in biometric functionality will immediately alert your local medical emergency services.
This is why I keep saying that Teslas are absolutely perfect if you live in the bay. Not only can you park in cities for free instead of paying up the ass, you can also charge while you're there, traffic is absolute ass if you commute so you get carpool and now you can just sleep since you have to leave 90 minutes early to get to a place that's 30 minutes away

The problem is that it's not really safe with the current hardware. It's only got a forward facing camera, and only forward facing radar. All other directions are only covered by short range sonar sensors. That's fine if nothing happens but it's not got any peripheral vision yet to see other people doing stupid shit.
what if you accidentally put in the wrong destination and wake up 6 hours later in another town.
Imo this is probably an advertisement.

Well, if other people are doing stupid shit, its not necessarily your fault, is it?

There's no destination input. It just follows the lines on the road, or the vehicle in front of it. If the traffic clears up and he ends up behind a semi truck, there's a chance the car would follow it to god knows where.

not to mention the train rocking you gently to sleep

That would suck if your car just kept going, and you woke up in the middle of nowhere with a dead battery.

Well a human can avoid it, AP needs the next generation of hardware to let it see all around itself to do that.
What if his foot slipped and went full force down on the gas pedal?

oh man I wish I could even theoretically do that
everything, subway, buses are fucking packed with angry tired people with sometimes no space to even get on the damn thing in the first place, both in the mornings and in the evenings
it's a miracle to even find a place to sit and even then you're gonna give it to a random granny while wondering where the fuck are you going at 8am in the tuesday morning

On a big trip? sure
But coming home from work, tired, on like a 20 mins drive? I'd be cranky as hell in the end :(
This is pretty great.

having a tesla in russia is pretty far away imo
there is no charging infrastructure, you'd need to have a garage to charge it at reliably, and it wouldn't recognize the road lines most likely as I'm sure you are aware, those aren't everywhere at all
i would love nothing more than an autopilot commute though
SAMMY PLEASE LISTEN TO MY CALLS
I really want Tesla to have a voice like Siri or a GPS that yells at you if you don't respond.

I was talking more about sleeping on public transport though

the future of shitty horror movies is bright
This is why sleeping with it on isn't a good idea

Looks like it tried to follow the car overtaking the van, and the van was to far to the left for the radar dish on the front to detect it soon enough. The stereoscopic camera setup that is rumoured to be coming would probably fix that issue I immagine.

It kinda is a big deal, the technology isn't 100 percent yet and even though the autopilot does it jobs correctly and safely that does not take into account other drivers.
When you are in a car or any vehicle you need to be alert and aware so you can react to other drivers. I can think of a dozen situations in which this guy is sleeping and his car will not react accordingly.
I mean its dumb now, but imagine that someday this will not only become safe to do but completely normal. This kinda thing was almost science fiction 20 years ago.
I can't wait for cars to have beds instead of chairs.
