its sad because at this point if you already play on the JP version theres no reason ever to switch to an english version. besides the fact you would have to re-grind EVERYTHING all over again, content would also be slower since every new update would have to be localized first.

I mean it's already all localized for the most part. Unless something has changed, fan efforts to localize to English have been going on for awhile.
Really don't know why they never bothered to release outside of Japan and SEA. Really a shame

With all the crossover promotions and the pure amount of content the game's built up over time, a western release is pretty unfeasible. At least with the english patch on PC the game is perfectly playable.

like they would ever utilize a fan localization for an official one
youre forgetting all the cross promotions too. with how much copyright fuckery and other shit like that they would have to contend with, im sure they would end up ripping a lot of that stuff out of the game

it sucks the most because it makes it way harder to get people to play with. the english community is small unless youre on the 'main' server (which i dont think i was), and then you only have the option of playing with people who only speak moonrunes. i loved playing the game but my friends got bored of it and stopped playing, and then i stopped too as a result.
Why is the Phantasy Star IP so stingy out of Japan? I always hear people crying for a global/western release of certain games but it never comes.
Even without the cross promotion / copyright complications, SEGA of Japan is notoriously spiteful towards SEGA of America with Phantasy Star when it comes to online. Universe had major updates and seasonal events held back from the west for months on end for no real reason, as it wasn't even localization or copyright issues specifically.

SEGA of Japan has major distrust issues in its IP's outside of Japan (except for Sonic). PSU suffered mainly because of the poor sales in the US (a majority of its players were console). Due to their mistrust, they often don't allow content to be released, or if they do, in restricted quantities.
[sp]PSUC is up if you wanna play PSU JP still though.[/sp]

There's also private servers around for PSO1, both on PC and consoles. Some even still support the DC version.
