Some of the expressions this thing makes are fucking bizarre.
Some of the expressions this thing makes are fucking bizarre.
feels like the old hl2 tech demo where they showed off facial animations
Hopefully their next tests will involve some more subtle animations. Their faces look super good and the range of movement is perfect, but the expressions are exaggerated and don't seem like they were programmed to the actual voice clips. I wonder if that might be because it's built off of a system where they program it to several different preset movements/expressions rather than a proper animation system that gives you freedom to move the face as it should.

Lincoln was super stoked about the fact that he has 7 moving neck vertebrae.
Every once in a while it accidentally achieves a convincing human expression and it's just cool as hell to look at
those are some meme worthy faces right there

I'm actually surprised. It feels like we're ascending back up the uncanny valley. Sure some of the faces he makes are weird, but that's probably just to demonstrate the limits on how his face flexes. If they lower is emotional range, that could pass for a completely realistic human.
I don't think all the expressions are necessarily exaggerated, but that the servo movement is too smooth. muscles jerk. the curving profile is much sharper and for a much lesser time frame on stop and start of the contractions in real life than what is displayed here.
The mechanics are fantastic but I wish we could see something this complex without the exaggerated anatomy and animations. I feel like even though this one is much less complex it's way more convincing.
If they had a way to have the speakers inside the mouth, it wouldn't look...feel as weird as it does now. At least I think so. ^that one is amazing but it's nowhere near as robust. The mechanism only controls jaw, eyeball, and eyelid rotation. The good ass motion comes from the controlled thickness of the silicone skin.
