We can associate fear with objects regardless of how irrational it may be. For instance, being afraid of heights is a reasonable fear to have, but very few of us are as terrified of driving or heart disease, both of which are dangers faced by significant portions of the population.
I'm no neuroscientist, but I'm guessing it's like many of the other slip-ups our minds can make (deja vu, optical illusions, etc) but on a more permanent basis.
So is it all cats like lions too or is it just house cats? Because you got problems if you're more afraid of kittens behind a glass than lions.

Probably a traumatic childhood experience with cats. I forget who theorized that, but its pretty basic psychology.

I am absolutely terrified by the thought of folklore gnomes. Those Portuguese gnome videos from a few years back had me paranoid for days.
Luckily there isn't a center that has hundreds of gnomes locked up, so I don't have to deal with that shit.
I think my little sister had a fear of being put/walking on the ground when she was a couple years old. I guess she thought that the ground was going to eat her or some shit.

These videos got kinda popular a few years back, and for some reason, they terrified me.
I simply don't understand phobias, no matter how silly they may be. I can't comprehend it. None of my friends have irrational fears (that I'm aware of).
Wow this is just like the first episode where this huge bald guy with tattoos all over his body was afraid to touch a puppy Pit Bull. But this is worse.
