You can also build any logic gate using only NOR gates, which weren't included with the basic gates in the video. The Apollo flight computer that took us to the moon was built out of integrated circuits using only NOR gates. Using only one type of gate improved reliability and reduced production costs.
dude in the second video has the best/shittiest looking facial hair i've ever seen
these are like, really basic concepts for what i assume are most people who are interested in computer science on facepunch

Yes, but quite a lot of people aren't
My class was actually tasked to create a calculator exactly like that in high school, the reason why we didn't use NOR gates exclusively was because they wanted us to be introduced to a wider variety of them

Depends on the school.
Over the past few years, Western Washington University has moved away from the hardware and electronics side of computer science. If I had started the program two years earlier, I would have been the last generation of classes that actually worked with logic gates.
The lowest level we go now is Assembly with computer architectures. We never actually deal with logic gates.
So, you know, I'm a senior in the CS program and don't know fuck all about logic gates. :v:
We did stuff like this in high school, was fun.
I find it a right of passage and fun challenge to build a fully operating CPU out of VHDL or bonus points for physical logic ICs.
I made this in minecraft without really following any tutorials.

This kind of thing is really electronic engineering, not computer science.

i'm aware. but it's covered in most CS curriculum
