this is one of the few reviews that i've ever seen that actually gives a reason for why ocarina is so great
i liked ocarina but never fawned over it, and now i can see why other people do
Why did the graphics look so... good? Is he using like HD patches? Is the footage from an emulator that's rendering at higher resolution? Or did the game just always look that good? Because I don't remember this game looking that good.

Judging from Link's head, this is probably the 3DS version.

It's a bit of a mishmash between old footage from the N64/Gamecube version and the 3ds versions, yeah.
i cried at the end of oot
oh man nobody has ever articulated my thoughts playing this game so accurately
Welp time to replay OOT.

I disagree
It seemed like the same little gush I hear everyone talk about, going
"wow the music is just GREAT and link is just HYEAAH and it REALLY feels like this EPIC ADVENTURE, and hoLY SHIT its just SO GOOD, and the TIME TRAVEL" and yeah, it gets tiring after a while
Having only actually played Ocarina of Time a few years older than Dunkey was (10), I have even less of a nostalgia-vision than he does. Best I can say is that back when this game came out, I can totally understand being "holy SHIT this is a fucking masterpiece" since it was a dawn of a new era of gaming, and Ocarina of Time revamped Zelda as a whole and made it feel like something incredible that you've never experienced before
Present time, if a game is as good as Ocarina of Time, it's sub-par. Standards are higher now, because we've past that era where Ocarina of Time was a must-play game of all time. But if someone has been playing modern AAA titles, and then moved on to start OoT, I'm pessimistic they'll be as blown away as we all are.
To me, OOT is just Dark Souls of the past. Lighter in mood, not as difficult, but the sheer scope of the world and the way the story is told remind me a lot of the DS games. Which is fitting, I played OOT and loved it as a kid, then I moved on to Dark Souls which is just an adult version of OOT as far as I'm concerned.

DS's combat system is pretty much an evolved version of OOT's combat system.

Yeah, almost every review I've seen of OOT carries the same points; I mean, they should of course share the same points, since everyone can agree on what makes the game great.
But how many versions of the same review do we need from dozens (maybe even hundreds) of youtubers?
When he started on about the great parts of the game, I was half hoping for him to just splice in a bunch of other reviews as a way to show "hey, there's nothing more to be said about OOT that hasn't been said already."
I enjoy Dunkey's videos, but I was expecting something different from this one than a genuine review, I guess?

Most of his Dunkviews are entirely genuine, which I love, because when he shit all over Last of Us no one took him seriously (thinking it was satire), which kind of proved his point that people aren't willing to look past the bandwagon.

He isn't really doing a great job looking past the bandwagon this game has strolling behind it either though, to be brutally honest.
Majoras mask is the underdog, I think it's better. But He's right about one thing;
There is no game out there that captures the feeling of being on an adventure like Ocarina of time.

Well he's not out just to be a contrarian. He thinks TLOU is legitimately a poor game, and that OoT is legitimately a good game.

I haven't played last of us so I cant really say much about it buuut.
I thought it looked not that great, sure it looked good but I have seen so many 10/10 best game evar that I just don't buy it from what little I have seen.
But then again, I also said this about Bioshock Infinite so maybe my taste is just different.
Majora's mask was too hard for me as a kid so I never finished it. It was fun but very confusing, that is why I am guessing it is underrated.
The reputation for Majora's Mask seem to be mixed, some people love it while some people can't get over the time mechanic. I can see why some people don't like it that much, it is a very unique game and it takes time getting used to it.
I think the majority of people who go back and play Majora's Mask as an adult appreciate it a ton. Being older and not a stupid child, the time mechanic becomes very unique and the dark tones and themes of Majora can be better appreciated. I would guess that many of those people who say the game was confusing or overly complicated haven't played it in 10 years.
i actually played both OOT and Majoras mask in my early 20s, and really thought majora's mask was stronger on atmosphere and mechanics and pretty much nearly everything
OOT definitely has more iconic locations and music though, I'll give it that
I'm still yet to play Ocarina of Time. Alas as I have no Nintendo Consoles or Handhelds it's going to stay that way for a while.
There is one thing he completely forgot to mention, though.
The dungeons fucking suck.
I mean, don't get me wrong, they have their moments, and some of the bosses are pretty cool and all, but for the most part, the dungeons are just a huge fucking sludge through.
They get boring so fast, and they're all so long, and there's so goddamn many of them, spaced so closely.
Around the 6th dungeon I just quit the game.
DS's combat system is pretty much an evolved version of OOT's combat system.
Well, it's like if you took King's Field in terms of mechanics and systems, then implemented them onto a 3D Zelda-style movement and combat system where enemies are actually designed around being threats in combat instead of the simplistic 'lock and slash / use items' systems of OoT.

You mean the Water Temple? Honestly, in my 3DS playthrough a few years ago I completed all the dungeons in half an hour to an hour. I get that Ocarina of Time's dungeons may not be the best of the series but that really is the main meat of puzzles and combat in the entire game, so you.. basically don't seem to like the real meat and potatoes of OoT at all.

No. It really does still holds up as a great adventure.

No, not the water temple. Every dungeon.
They all suck shit, some of the worst dungeons I've seen in the series.
Most of the overworld stuff was great, and that's what I played it for.

In my opinion you NEED to play OOT before Majora. I think Majora is a better game as well but without seeing what amazing game it improved on then it's kinda meaningless.
Same applies for Link between Worlds. I've heard a few people say Link to the Past is better then OOT but I didn't really like it myself. I would still recommend people play through LTTP before LBW.

IIRC they made some changes with the lighting and textures in the 3DS version that made the water temple a lot more better.

I don't think that's a fair comparison, the water temple was changed to be easier in the 3ds version.

Only by the principle of less framerate loss, the inventory system in general being made more intuitive and easier to instantly toggle the Iron Boots, and three glowing lines throughout the dungeon leading to the water-level changing rooms so memorization is less difficult. They didn't actually modify the challenge of the dungeon itself whatsoever, the big fault with the old N64 release was the sluggish underwater capabilities combined with slow framerate and the pause menu for toggling iron boots constantly.

I played OOT when I was like 6 years old or something on an N64 emulator. All I remember about it was just getting annoyed and not knowing what to do. I just don't click with that kind of gameplay I guess cause I have a pretty shit attention span. I was more into linear, reflex based, short burst type stuff like Mario world/DKC/Yoshi's Island rather than the exploratory puzzley stuff like Zelda/Metroid even at a young age. I can still appreciate older games in that style that I have no nostalgic attachment to though, e.g Shatterhand/Mega Man which I played pretty recently. Even though plenty of indie games or modern platformers or anything else with similar design philosophy might achieve the same things with similar/better quality there's something charming about playing a game from the 80s/early 90s that actually established all this shit that people are still inspired by to this day, and the gameplay experience is pretty solid in it's own right considering that. I think that's what dunkey is trying to say. Not that it's necessarily better than modern games, but it's a game that established a lot of shit when it came out that games today still draw from, AND the fundamental gameplay is still solid enough to be enjoyable.

Oh, really? I thought they actually changed the layout. Huh.
I played OOT for the first time a year ago and I made almost to the end but got bored. It wasn't memorable.
