it kind of astounds me how hard they failed. Obviously, the power generation, heating, and whatnot was ludicrous. But you'd expect them to at least be able to get a few panels with LEDs looking pretty for a couple of weeks.
well if anything they look cool on thermal imaging
I didn't think I'd hear about solar roadways again. I'm worried though about how weird Thunderf00t is about it. Mentioning broken LEDs like three separate times in the video. Wanting to jump over the thing at 8:17, sounding like that kid with the 4:20 on the microwave at 8:28, burping at 9:30. I mean his points are reasonably valid, but those cues make me think he's not doing well.
Solar Roadways are such a huge scam its not even funny [editline]15th August 2017[/editline] They're so overcomplicated and have far too many things-to-go-wrong that it's never going to work and never going to be practical
I wonder if making asphalt from transparent quartz would work.
It's like solar panels are the smart-x of infrastructure. Put solar panels in our border walls and roads, no reason.... just to maker it more better!
how long until we get a wifi connected solar draw-bridge and news of someone opening it while people are on it
Solar roadways make so little sense, especially in a country with as much free space as the US.
Solar roadways make so little sense, especially in a country with as much free space as the US.
I could maybe see the idea working if 1. It's a solar panel and that's it, with glass that'll last up against even large foot traffic 2. it's specifically for a lounge area where there is no heavy foot traffic and even then there is still no point. Use your roof and fences for panels. Ground panels are just, on their own fruitless. It's an idea that counters itself. You'd be better off putting panels on the fencing area of roads, where you don't have to worry about cars constantly tearing them up. There's a lot of space around even country roads and highways that this will work.
EEVblog made a video on this last year. From 24:25 he makes the point in the above post very succinctly.
These videos are important. Not only do they expose the scam that is solar roadways. They also bring awareness to the mass irrationality that sadly is a part of our reality, enabling bad ideas like this to flourish.

Like I get what you're saying, but I don't think I'd extrapolate all of that just from a stupid thing like this.
I really wish he'd stop using that "I have seen the future and it is solar freakin roadways" clip. The audio fucks up when the applause starts and ends up sounding like a lot of really loud white noise.

It'd be pretty easy to remaster the audio of that clip to make it not ear-rape.
are you ok? Like I get what you're saying, but I don't think I'd extrapolate all of that just from a stupid thing like this.
Stuff like this is a pretty massive drain on humanity and to the credibility of science in the eyes of the public. Real scientists actually do need funding, and it gets diverted to charlatan fucks like this. It is worth being angry about.
are you ok? Like I get what you're saying, but I don't think I'd extrapolate all of that just from a stupid thing like this.
they are getting majillions of dollars for what is effectively a blatant scam money that could be used on actual important shit and actual projects
How did anyone ever think this was a good idea? Why put solar panels in a spot where they're constantly going to be run over by tons of machinery instead of literally anywhere else with sunlight?
Also, assuming they worked as magically as they claim, what happens when there's a massive breakthrough in solar panel efficiency? Do you start ripping them up to replace them? Just never upgrade them?
Like I get what you're saying, but I don't think I'd extrapolate all of that just from a stupid thing like this.
Well, how many solar roadway videos from Thunderf00t are there now? It's not insignificant.
are you ok?
No
are you ok?
asshole question
I really wish he'd stop using that "I have seen the future and it is solar freakin roadways" clip. The audio fucks up when the applause starts and ends up sounding like a lot of really loud white noise.
nathan fillion stars in the movie White Noise 2
Well, how many solar roadway videos from Thunderf00t are there now? It's not insignificant.
I mean solar roadways are the only reason I know who he is
are you ok?
umm are you feeling ok sweetie? do you need to calm down with the passivey aggressivey honey pumpkin?
they are getting majillions of dollars for what is effectively a blatant scam money that could be used on actual important shit and actual projects
Not to mention anybody that only sees the original video is left with a vastly inflated idea of what's possible with solar, led, manufacturing, logistics, construction, basically every type of technology there is.
Are solar roadways like the West's version of that one hoax in Africa with the witch pulling diesel out of a stone and getting government funding to persue it?
are you ok? Like I get what you're saying, but I don't think I'd extrapolate all of that just from a stupid thing like this.
Mmm, and every cent spent on pipe dream bullshit like solar freakin' roadways is a dollar that didnt go to something useful, like fusion reactor research or NASA. Its far better to spend grant money on creating artificial Suns that can be directly and fully harvested in a compact location than trying and failing to harvest the one we already have by paving the planet with solar panels.

According to a low effort google search they're around $16.8k on average so you could have just paid for ~238 people to have roofs with the 4 million dollars wasted on this boondoggle. Not an enormous impact in the long run but depending on the quality of panels and location they could have zero power bills and actually contribute to the grid as well. Instead they spent $500k of the funding alone on what are essentially really expensive but cheaply and poorly made hobby toys in a sidewalk somewhere

Next time somebody launches a social media about their genius idea we can point to the ugly broken tiles on the ground.
They made a very expensive cautionary tale about the danger of hype culture. Next time somebody launches a social media about their genius idea we can point to the ugly broken tiles on the ground.
Reminds me of how I hate this trend of "Make a video of it on social media and trick people who don't know that it actually doesn't work" that some people do.
They made a very expensive cautionary tale about the danger of hype culture. Next time somebody launches a social media about their genius idea we can point to the ugly broken tiles on the ground.
I don't really think that's even happening though unfortunately. I bet if you asked most people who were hyped about it how they feel about it now, most would have not looked at any of the legitimate criticism and some of them shown it would even deny it as big oil or something. That, and it's part of a long line of big scams (many of which thunderf00t has also done videos on like the hilarious electric gill that claimed to have a 100x denser battery or something, and the self filling waterbottle that could not possibly generate water as fast as it claimed even under the best conditions). I think most people honestly just don't want to face reality and would just rather believe they saw something really cool and quickly move on from it instead of taking a critical perspective on what they saw.
The only reason this caught fire (no pun intended) in the first place was because of the showy introductory video - which is just filled to the brim with misinformation anyways. I don't think many people would've given it much thought if it played more like something you would see in an episode of Kickstarter Crap and clearly shown how shoddy it is.
