I've been thoroughly convinced for a while that half the reason for Metallica's recent material being crap can be pinned entirely on the tone and mix moreso than the actual quality of the songs themselves.

Master of Puppets & Black Album are my favourites; I still love playing some of the songs on my 7-string.
Ride the Lightning sounds great. Fav album by Metallica.
That being said, I really don't mind the original Hardwired. A bit boring, and underwhelming bass/overwhelming drums, but otherwise I quite like it.
