i understand the point was to show gordon as a human being with emotion, but after getting a pistol and flares and recognizing that the HEV suit saved him, you think he wouldn't waste it.
IMO it could have worked if you had him think about it, then decide to fight back (think Peter in the original Dawn of the Dead). Perhaps, he looks down, closes his eyes, and then hears a scientist screaming. Opens his eyes, looks down, turns around, runs into the hall, and kills the headcrab chasing the scientist. Looks at it, picks it up, it's dead. Looks at the gun, drops the headcrab, starts walking forward down the hallway slowly, sighs, cut to black.
