[sp]imo while the trailer's in 1st person I'm still not sure that their gonna do that for the final game. After all, they did it in P.T to hide old Normans appearance. I'm betting their still going third person.
While it's also been debated that SH would suck in first person, I'd disagree. P.T was pretty damn terrifying in first person, maybe because you're closer to the horror that way, as you cant hide
behind a protagonist. Also, if you haven't already, check out the Achemilla mod for HL2, which is pretty fucking scary for a silent hill adaption in first person.
And while what we're seeing is pretty early stuff (games not due till 2016) it looks pretty damn much like a japanese horror game (bugs, weird girls and all)
I'm cautiously optimistic about this one. At least this one is in the hands of an accomplished game developer, rather then some unknown american team with 2 mobile games to their name :\[/sp]
I find it strange that people say Silent Hill couldn't work as a first person game. Not that this will end up as a total first person game, but the idea that it will have first person segments excites me.
Also, [sp]holy shit that hallway monster[/sp]
I actually think the first person view works much better than the standard third person view. Atleast for me it's easier to get immersed that way, especially with the FOX engine.

Best case scenario would be the ability to switch freely.
fuck me that door at the end was cool
i definitely rike it
I'm praying for this to not be a ps4 exclusive
I'm praying for this to not be a ps4 exclusive
There have actually been less Playstation-exclusive Silent Hill games then exclusive ones, so it's not outside the realm of possibility for it to be multiplat.
I want this
To be honest I just want them to make a movie. But Revelation kind of sank that boat.
maybe i'm just being overly optimistic, but i can't see them fucking this up.

By the look of it, this game is in very good hands.
Complete guess here but I feel like they'll do a some parts are first person, some are third. Like with SH4

my immediate assumption is that they'll use first person for inside segments and third person for outside segments
and knowing kojima, he'll find some cool way to mix it up and catch people off guard
my only experience of silent hill was half of the HD collection.
I've heard nothing but shit for it.

third person horror doesn't feel like horror, it feels like a shooter or action game
Alan Wake being a main example, but that wasn't meant to be 'scary'.
If it isn't first person it just can't feel like I'm there. Another thing is to try and avoid naming the main character too much.

i do not see them going back to fixed camera angles for this, i'd fuckin love it but some would argue it's archaic
odds are this will be 3rd or 1st person
also please play the original silent hill 2 and 3, also 1 and maybe 4
man i hope they don't do the shattered memories/amnesia running away from monsters gameplay. those played tediously to begin with, and now almost every horror game since amnesia has been obligated to do it like that

well running away is still better than the combat in downpour and homecoming, at least running away makes the monsters more threatening while with the combat in downpour and homecoming they were just enemies to kill
I sincerely hope this is coming to PC. I hope that they're making the game almost fully like this trailer. Creepy shit in general. Do want.

Terrible experience then, they fucked it up real good.

yeah totally. it's just pretty dull when it's just running and hiding, i can never get into it the same way i can when i'm actively being attacked and have to defend myself. but i would hope Kojima would do the early silent hill thing and make running away more like a sensible suggestion instead of forcing you to fight or run
[editline]18th September[/editline]
i mean not to say you can't have enemies you have to run or hide from because the ghosts in sh4 were cool but even there you could eventually use valuable resources to kill them. which is both way more stressful and far less annoying than if you ran from the same ghosts the whole game
the ghosts in sh4 are the reason i *personally* find sh4 the scariest
ghosts are scary man
[editline]18th September 2014[/editline]
doesn't mean i think its the best sh, because fuck most of the 2nd half of that game
Hai
This trailer gave me PTSH
Can anyone credit this source? It apparently has a shot interview with Kojima about deciding weather or not the games in first or third person, but the site looks sketchy.
With third person you get a more disconnected and obfuscated view. You see your character perform actions as an individual, which gives you a sense of disconnect from their personalities. Like James, who goes through a lot of shit and discovers he caused a lot of shit. you see him react to and take all of this, rather then yourself. If SH2 was in first-person, you'd fill in the role of James, and as such you'd be reacting to it, rather then the character. And as Jackald said, in third person the game can literally stick your camera at an angle or a corner that makes it harder to see the finer points, making everything more indistinct and threatening. SH2 looks a lot different when you fly around it with a camera hack.
That's kind of the vague issue I had with the newer SH's. From SH1 to SH3 (maybe 4), you can see everything pretty clearly enough, it's just everything is so fucked up, low-res and undefinable that it's a lot more sickening and disquieting. But in the newer, more detailed games of the current gen, those fucked up and undefinable things are high resolution and clearly visible, so the dev's choose to hide it behind fucktons of dirt, grit, darkness and fog. SH's horror doesn't come from the unknown, it comes from the unknowable.
But in first person, you get a much more personal view of the horror. Everything is clear and in your face and there's no one in front of you to react, besides maybe a pair of hands. It's also easier to make a player jump, since they're much closer to the action. Seeing a ghostie girl pop around the corner in first person is twice as terrifying as seeing it from over the shoulder of the main protagonist.
imo both view points have different cons and pros, but they both generate different and unique styles of horror. I hope SH's combines both, using third-person for the majority and first person for the more detailed, up close and personal scenes and finds a way to balance them nicely, so the player gets a bit of both worlds when it comes to the horror. (I really like how P.T's first person view gives you the opportunity to really get close and study the environment. You can pack in and let the player discover a lot more detail in first person.)
jesus christ essay over :v:
I suddenly realize I haven't really played any Silent Hill games. But from what I've seen of some the games makes me really like the fixed camera angles as there's many ways to use them to emphasize the atmosphere.
But I agree that alternating between 3rd person and 1st person in certain areas and in a non-jarring way could be interesting.
^ I really hate what modern horrors are trying to do. I mean some can create a fairly creep atmosphere, but they completely ruin it when there is just a "BLARGH!" in your face scare. Look at Outlast for example. That game had a creepy as fuck atmosphere, but they had to ruin it with moments that had high pitched music, and something popping up out of no where.
Yeah, I really hope they manage to keep a similar atmosphere like in P.T. I mean, there still was some jump scares, but I feel the general feel of the atmosphere had a much bigger impact on the experience.
I especially liked the sound design of P.T. Creepy use of the surround effect.

There's nothing really wrong with jumpscares, the problem is when the entire game is nothing but jumpscares. Jumpscares are alright when used scarcely but when you start putting them everywhere it's no longer "scary" (aka startling) but is now instead annoying.
Del toro always makes the coolest monsters, hopefully he will be designing some scary monsters for Silent Hills

Maybe instead of a Room its an entire house that acts as a hub and that is whats in first person. Kind of like how underhell works with its house/dreams+fps aspect, but change the fps to a third person game.
