They actually had planned on using Bane before in a scene with Darth Revan. They had his silly helmet and everything.

Darth Vader's armour was already inspired by Japanese styles.

Orignally the silly looking Bane we all know as well as Darth Reven were in an episode, sadly cut during late production of the scene. Had that actually got into TCW then KOTOR Darth Revan not SWTOR Revan would be cemented in offical SW canon.
