Actually, this could have been easily done in any key, he just assigned the numbers to each chord progression in the scale.
So like a major scale I-ii-iii-IV-V-vi-vii (8 and 9, being I and ii just an octave higher... and the number 0 just being vii just an octave lower)
... and then, voila, with some piano skills... you could play the pi sonata in any key.
