Amazing how Russians made dancing puppets, that were actually dancing people in masks. And it was made in 1939!

I hope this will be colored as Cinderella (1946):

What was that?
Hardcore rotoscoping?
That looks very good. For that age? My lord.
The musta either had a really tall guy or loadsa little guys.
- Invasion of Poland is going well.
- Now playing Pinnokio HD (1939)
The dancing people was a great effect for the time
BTW why does he put the golden key in his ass?

Its a projection onto a background. King Kong did the same thing.
Holy shit, that's from the 30's?
I wonder how they accomplished the effect.
The sad thing is in modern times we jerk off to CGI and it doesn't look nearly as real.
Behold! The ingenuity of the Russian people when they are sober for longer than 5 minutes!
The end was brutal.
That bearded guy scares me D:

I don't think marvelling at how fucking amazing computer generated graphics are becoming is a sad thing

Just imagine what would happen if they stayed sober for an hour.
They would take over the world in few days.
That's why we must make sure their supply of alcohol never runs out.

No you misread. CGI looks WORSE than this. Uncanny valley and all that. I mean obviously their costumes suck but the miniature people effect is fine and there could easily be a better costume.
Nowadays some guy would just throw in a shit ton of fake looking CGI puppets so the studio won't have to hire actors.
The Ruskies also made some really good stop motion stuff, even earlier than this. Hell if I know why they were so good at film, and simultaneously going through wars and revolutions and shit.
Is it a bad thing that I was convinced it was meant sarcastically when I read the title?

Yes, it is. This's called prejudice and national profiling.
For 1939, that's pretty good.
Wizard of Oz was also made in 1939.
That movie had some great effects for the time.

Happy to see something good came out of a era of purges.
Russia had an advanced film infrastructure before and during the Soviet Union. There were many intellectuals during the Soviet Union, and art was a respected field.

Why the hell does he beat the crap out of the doll in the end?
Why the hell does he beat the crap out of the doll in the end?
Because it doesn't dance, as it should.

YES I READ 'AMAZING SPECIAL EFFECTS' AND '1939' BUT 'SOVIET' REALLY THREW ME OFF
/caps
No really.

Something good came out because it was an era of purges.
It isn't special effects, it's just midgets.
