So I can't help but notice, and chronically listen to educational music. In addition to being catchy as hell the videos that go along with them are equally entertaining and you get to LEARN. There is no downside to this deal. Popular bands create some of this music such as They Might Be Giants and Barenaked Ladies. Here are a few of my favorites. They Might Be Giants - Why Does The Sun Shine?
The sun is a mass of incandescent gas A gigantic nuclear furnace Where hydrogen is built into helium At a temperature of millions of degrees Yo ho, it's hot, the sun is not A place where we could live But here on earth there'd be no life Without the light it gives We need it's light We need it's heat We need it's energy Without the sun, without a doubt There'd be no you and me The sun is a mass of incandescent gas A gigantic nuclear furnace Where hydrogen is built into helium At a temperature of millions of degrees The sun is hot It is so hot that everything on it is a gas: iron, copper, aluminum, and many others. The sun is large If the sun were hollow, a million earths could fit inside. and yet, the sun is only a middle-sized star. The sun is far away About 93 million miles away, and that's why it looks so small. And even when it's out of sight The sun shines night and day The sun gives heat The sun gives light The sunlight that we see The sunlight comes from our own sun's Atomic energy Scientists have found that the sun is a huge atom-smashing machine. the heat and light of the sun come from the nuclear reactions of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and helium. (*) The sun is a mass of incandescent gas A gigantic nuclear furnace Where hydrogen is built into helium At a temperature of millions of degrees [(*)Live versions of this song are improvised extensively. some variants on this section:] Scientists have found that the sun is a huge atom-smashing machine. the heat and light of the sun are caused by the nuclear reaction between hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon, and helium. Scientists have found that the sun is a huge atom-smashing machine. the heat and light from the sun come from the nuclear reaction between oxygen, hydrogen, helium, and hydrogen. You know, frank, scientists have found that the sun is a huge atom-smashing machine. the heat and light from the sun are caused by the nuclear reaction between hydrogen and you, frank o'toole. Scientists have found that the sun is a huge atom-smashing machine. the heat and light from the sun come from the nuclear reaction between hydrogen, nitrogen, helium, carbon, boron, chloron, flu Moron, and estrogen.
Although I loved that song since I was a kid (probably the only reason I did well in the segment of Science Class) the scientific method continued on and years after the release of that song a new theory was accepted and they had to make a new song. They Might Be Giants - The Sun is a Miasma of Incandescent Plasma.
The sun is a miasma Of incandescent plasma The sun's not simply made out of gas No, no, no The sun is a quagmire It's not made of fire Forget what you've been told in the past (Plasma!) Electrons are free (Plasma!) A fourth state of matter Not gas, not liquid, not solid The sun is no red dwarf I hope it never morphs Into some supernova'd collapsed orb Orb, orb, orb The sun is a miasma Of incandescent plasma I forget what I was told by myself Elf, elf, elf (Plasma!) Electrons are free (Plasma!) A fourth state of matter Not gas, not liquid, not solid (Plasma!) Forget that song (Plasma!) They got it wrong That thesis has been rendered invalid
They Might Be Giants - Meet the Elements
Iron is a metal, you see it every day Oxygen, eventually, will make it rust away Carbon in its ordinary form is coal Crush it together, and diamonds are born Come on come on and meet the elements May I introduce you to our friends, the elements? Like a box of paints that are mixed to make every shade They either combine to make a chemical compound or stand alone as they are Neon's a gas that lights up the sign for a pizza place The coins that you pay with are copper, nickel, and zinc Silicon and oxygen make concrete bricks and glass Now add some gold and silver for some pizza place class Come on come on and meet the elements I think you should check out the ones they call the elements Like a box of paints that are mixed to make every shade They either combine to make a chemical compound or stand alone as they are Team up with other elements making compounds when they combine Or make up a simple element formed out of atoms of the one kind Balloons are full of helium, and so is every star Stars are mostly hydrogen, which may someday fuel your car Hey, who let in all these elephants? Did you know that elephants are made of elements? Elephants are mostly made of four elements And every living thing is mostly made of four elements Plants, bugs, birds, fish, bacteria and men Are mostly carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen Come on come on and meet the elements You and I are complicated, but we're made of elements Like a box of paints that are mixed to make every shade They either combine to make a chemical compound or stand alone as they are Team up with other elements making compounds when they combine Or make up a simple element formed out of atoms of the one kind Come on come on and meet the elements Check out the ones they call the elements Like a box of paints that are mixed to make every shade They either combine to make a chemical compound or stand alone as they are
And the last TMBG song I'll post is one of my personal favorites. They Might Be Giants - I Am a Paleontologist
I love diggin' in the dirt With just a pick and brush Finding fossils is my aim So I'm never in a rush 'Cause the treasures that I seek Are rare and ancient things Like Velociraptor's jaw Or Archaeopteryx's wings Now all the kids Who wanna see 'em Are lining up At our museum I am a paleontologist That's who I am, that's who I am, that's who I am I am a paleontologist That's who I am, that's who I am, that's who I am Could it be an herbivore Crushing plants with rounded teeth Or ferocious carnivore Who moves so quickly on its feet? It's like pieces of a puzzle That I love to try and solve It's so fun to think about How a species has evolved And all the kids Who wanna see 'em Can check 'em out At our museum I am a paleontologist That's who I am, that's who I am, that's who I am I am a paleontologist That's who I am, that's who I am, that's who I am Is it a T-rex? (I keep digging, digging, digging, digging) (Digging, digging, digging, digging) Maybe a Triceratops? (Digging, digging, digging, digging) (Digging, digging, digging, digging) Or a Carnotaur? (Digging, digging, digging, digging) (Digging, digging, digging, digging) (Digging, digging, digging, digging, diggin') Pachycephalosaurus? I am a paleontologist That's who I am, that's who I am, that's who I am I am a paleontologist That's who I am, that's who I am, that's who I am That's who I am, that's who I am, that's who I am That's who I am, that's who I am, that's who I am
The next band I'll post is Barenaked Ladies known for their hit songs 'One Week', 'Pinch me' and the opening for the Big Bang Theory. The first song is that famous, basic lesson on life cycles with the different stages of a Frog wrapped into a catchy song. Barenaked Ladies - Pollywog in a Bog
In a puddle by the trail Flips its tiny tail Just like a great big whale But smaller than a snail It's a pollywog in a bog Swims under soggy logs One day he'll be a frog Pollywog in a bog Overhead a cedar tree Gives the shade he needs Munching while he feeds On lily pads and weeds Knows not where he's from Or how his life had begun He's not the only one And soon he'll breathe through lungs It's hard to believe With the arms you'll receive You'll lift your head Above the water and breathe Gills shrink away And may there come a day When you reach the shore With a whole world to explore Ribbit, ribbit, a tadpole exhibit It's a transformation no one can inhibit Amphibian change may seem strange Take them gills and the tail and they all rearrange Out come the legs for the jump, jump Hope to the top of the stump, stump Out come the legs for the jump, jump Hope to the top of the stump, stump Where the mud is deep Frost will soon creep And without a peep A frog is fast asleep It was a pollywog in a bog Swam under soggy logs In the morning fog Pollywog in a bog Pollywog in a bog Swam under soggy logs In the morning fog Pollywog in a bog Pollywog in a bog Swam under soggy logs In the morning fog
And lastly Barenaked Ladies - 7 8 9
1, 2, 3 and 4 more makes 7 And 6 is afraid of 7...cause 7 ate 9! Nine was minding his business Talking to 10 about Gordy Howe's clothes Why 7 ate 9, nobody knows. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 10 What about 9? Seven ate nine! Oh the cat'll have to live with eight lives now Ronaldo will have to make do Ever since seven ate 9 it seems I've got an extra finger and an extra toe too Seven ate nine! Once upon a time in our solar system We couldn't make do without 9 But Pluto's not a planet now, so eight'll do fine. Oh the cat'll have to live with 8 lives now And the Chinese will be out of luck And the vampires will have to think of some other method Cause without their K-9's, how will they suck? Seven ate nine! 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 10 What about nine? Seven ate nine!
What are some other Educational Songs that, despite being made for small children are extremely catchy or at the very least have an interesting music video to accompany it?
Not really educational but they made a song for Courage the Cowardly Dog.
Not really educational but they made a song for Courage the Cowardly Dog.
They Might Be Giants have done a lot. They did a song from Courage the Cowardly Dog. You're right. 'Why Does the Sun Shine?" originally appeared on Nick's 'Kablam!' in a short skit which is what I remember from a kid. I didn't post this version because it's really quiet and not the full song. They also make mature and politically motivated music. Along with other songs that appeared in Cartoons and so on.
I also tried to find the Henderson Hasselbach song on Youtube but to no avail. I listened to both during my lectures.
