You play too much Call of Duty. You do realize usually for every shot fired about 10 miss. I think up to 2009, we've used hundreds of tons of ammo in Iraq that didn't hit anything. Also you think all guns have sniper qualities, ie. headshotting a raghead at whatever distance? Wrong. You have to compensate for recoil, fixing your sights, how accurate the gun is, fatigue, steadying the gun, and if your far away enough the Coriolis effect. Don't say you are better than the men defending our way of life, and trying to protect those people from the batshit insane Muslim extremists while you sit on your couch all day Commando Pro'ing some "luvel won, nub" in Black ops, or some shitty Post COD4 game.
Also the guy just firing wildly. IT'S CALLED SUPPRESSION, It's a pretty common tactic, but you don't seem to know that.

Listen, YOU'RE not gonna rush out and attract fire just to try and take out the enemies ambushing you. He kept himself collected (Thanks to Jund for correcting my brain), it's not like he could lock onto them and headshot bad guys until the cows come home. You'd probably do what any other person not trained for combat situations here would do: shit your pants and pray/hope that it all ends soon.

No in fact he was quite collected. You're not supposed to kill with an LMG, and popping your head out to aim down the sights is a bad idea.
