I still like this one better;

Rally car crashes are always terrifying, I distinctly remember one where I think it was Travis Pastrana and the first thing he asks once the car has come to rest is "Are you alive?" to his navigator.

It's neat, the first thing the driver did in this one was reach over and check if he's ok etc. I suppose the drivers are better "trained" to deal with crashes than the navigator.

Plus, rally/nascar cars are sturdy as fuck. The crashes would had killed people but yet many of them walk out of those wreckage alive.

I have read somewhere (which might not be true) that in cases like car crashes, human instinct of self preservation often kicks in the few moments leading up to a crash resulting in an attempt at course correction that can end up saving the driver's life at the cost their co-passengers.
If it were true, I wonder if the same occurs in high speed crashes in motorsports like these where a navigator is required.

They don't just walk out alive they walk out completely fucking fine. It's absolutely ridiculous how safe modern race cars are.

The passengers are just a few feet away in your car. If you crash, the passengers are also going to be a part of it regardless of the last millisecond course correction you have.

I think he means like slamming the passenger side of the car into a tree to save yourself.

Not always. On the outside, you may be intact, but the impacts can be extremely damaging to your internal organs. Not to mention the possibility of foreign objects making their way into the car and hitting the driver/passenger, it does happen. One of my favorites:

Driver was extremely lucky, his head left the vehicle during the rollover and his helmet successfully protected him. Not everyone gets so lucky.
