I still say to this day, it's his worst work I've ever heard from my entire life. Weak musical direction in the movie to top it off, so sad.
I will say the strongest parts are in those 3 mins, I haven't timed it but like 5 mins in the entire music released for the movie are okay.

compared to stuff like this too, 2:25 especially
It's not that I don't like it, but the above posters are right, compared to his other stuff it's kinddaaaa eh
Honestly the best musical piece to come out of TFA was the trailer score.

I disagree, and I think you missed the point of a good number of the piece's, ranging from the ones he explained in the video to a few of the others in the movie, it makes a lot of sense why he chose to do the things he did.
They aren't particularly good pieces to listen to casually, but when mixed with the film itself it does it's job perfectly.

no, some of the score used in the film didn't work while other parts could had been tweaked, like parts of Rey's theme shouldn't have had glissandos in the woodwind. I listen to plenty of scores, even went back to listening to the Jaws soundtrack because of this thread and enjoyed it.
I didn't even hear the music when I saw it to be honest, it was so weak and quiet that my brain phased it out. It's a shame too since I love John Williams' music
I feel like his work in the prequels was stronger and more inspired than what he put out in VII in terms of original tracks.

The score wasn't that memorable except the part where the X-Wings show up. Shit made me giddy as hell.
March of the Resistance (I believe that was the name of the music when X-Wings attack) is just pure Star Wars, and I also loved the music played when [sp]Han died.[/sp]
I heard the orchestra is much much smaller and the work shoddier because of his poor (and continually worsening) health.
When I first listened to the leaked soundtrack before the movie was out I wasn't that fond of it, but it grew on me more and more and I enjoy most pieces of it now

Don't forget this:

Only song that really stood out to me related to the film was this and I don't even know if there's an official version.

IIRC Most of the trailer music was not done by John Williams
Well I mean obviously it is based off his work, but he didn't do it.
This by far my least favorite of the entire soundtrack. When I heard it in theaters I was like. so circus music is their theme??? Its too bouncy is the problem.

I think the issue here with everyone is that the music of TFA is much more programmatic in nature than the previous films, especially the trilogy. The trilogy had a shit ton of finished pieces with huge melodies. The thing John went for this time was much more dependant on every action on the screen. I specifically remember a moment when Kylo Ren is [sp]looking for Rey on Takodana[/sp] and the entire piece "The Abduction" is literally a moment for moment recreation of the action on screen. I think the materials are certainly there in terms of themes, especially Rey's theme (which is in like almost every fucking song) and Kylo's little 5 not motif, he just needs to expand those themes back to the old way of doing things.
I think the new score definitely fits the new style of the film, however.
Hope Episode VII has a stronger soundtrack, maybe even a more memorable First Order theme like The Empire received in, well, Empire.

I remember it being a lot punchier in the theatrical version.

Yep they definitely edited it for the theatrical release.

Probably would have been better if they just recycled OT songs with a handful of new added in. Take this

Sounds like an OT song at first, then.. just turns into something else.

Not really? That's pretty much taking a bog-standard Star Wars song and making it louderer and slowerer because that makes it more DRAMATIC.
John Williams is to The Force Awakens like Howard Shore was to The Hobbit.

That's why I love that piece, you think its going to be something familiar and then does something else.
