He could have ran to a sink or something and ran water under it no matter how much it was burning. For the most part you can still hold onto a lot of things that are bursting into flames and take them somewhere safe to be extinguished. You may burn your hands in the process but a couple of small burns that can be treated is a lot better than burning your house down.

he did everything he could have possibly done wrong all in like 5 minutes. put it in the trash bag full of paper, tried to put it out with cardboard and when it didn't work he left the cardboard there, he could have smothered the fire with that mattress but all he did was waft it. do they not teach fire safety in Japan?

I think he was panicking and not thinking straight. My first thought when he picked up the trash was "Oh..go put it in the sink or bathtub." But he just moved it to a corner.
