Oh boy, can't wait to see how watered down and soulless this one is!
Posting my recent favorite GDQ moment while we wait.
Oh boy I can't wait for another year without a Mario Maker race
Nothing can top, for me, that first SGDQ I watched like three years ago. The Yoshi's Island speedrun it all started with was just mind-blasting.

Some glitches are allowed while others are. They should just call it "No major glitches" to appease everyone.

the measures to prevent funny shit will backfire and everyone will laugh at how stupid it is
But then you'd need to classify what a major and minor glitch is.
Yes, that's fine. The thing about glitchless is that it isn't glitchless, as some glitches are allowed, so it's not considered glitchless. No Major Glitches would be a better name because it still allows some glitches, both intentional by the player or unintentional (so that you don't have to restart the run because you accidentally triggered it). [editline]penis[/editline] When I went to watch my first glitchless speedrun, I was confused because of the fact that it allowed some glitches. I had to read up on a website what the rules for glitchless were and I found it confusing. The majority of glitchless speedruns disallow major glitches, so it would be better and less confusing to call it "no major glitches".
ahhh i really want it to be great ive been watching for about 4 years now, watching it with my gf was one of the first things we did when we were falling in love with each other, now we live together and watch it every year and it's super depressing how it just gets worse and worse... hoping that one of these gdqs the organizers realize their mistake and manage to bring back the atmosphere and tone that everyone misses, but i don't think it's ever gonna happen
Ever since they banned fun it hasn't been the same again
what's the deal with all the "gdq hates fun" posts
Does Bonesaw get to come back now
what's the deal with all the "gdq hates fun" posts
Two reasons. One, they really have been clamping down on any "spotinety" because now that they're earning millions of dollars for a cancer awareness foundation they want to avoid negtaive PR. Secondly, it's a case of an event that's grown so large it's long since left it's humble and small community roots- where more goofing was allowed and encouraged. This video is obligatory:
I can't wait to see what emotes are banned this year
yearly reminder to completely ignore this overly-PC fuckfest and give all of your dollars and attention to European Speedster Assembly cuz that's where the actual fun is
Fun is dead, long live fun.
One, they really have been clamping down on any "spotinety"
I've watched a bunch of VODs from the last couple and i thought it was fine. could you explain?
yearly reminder to completely ignore this overly-PC fuckfest and give all of your dollars and attention to European Speedster Assembly cuz that's where the actual fun is
Or, we can enjoy both events, because they're both a ton of fun. They both have plenty of good games being run by plenty of good runners. AGDQ skews slightly less hardcore and more family-friendly - but you don't need to say "fuck" every four minutes to be entertaining. And in my viewing, they seem to do a better job with having the runners actually talk, or at least have better commentary. And they seem to be doing more and more races, which I love. ESA (and the related North American Speedrunners Assembly) skew a bit towards more obscure games, and they don't try to control their runners as much - which is a mixed bag, because some of the ESA runs I've watched, the runner barely spoke and had nobody else to provide commentary for them, it was just watching them play in awkward silence. Not all of their runs are like this, and I've seen some stinkers at *GDQs, but it definitely happens more in ESA/NASA. As for the charity aspect or lack thereof, I don't give a fuck because I have never given any of them money, and if I ever do, it will be with zero charitable intent. If I wanted to give money to charity, I'd give directly to high-quality, high-impact charities like The Against Malaria Foundation or The Schistosomiasis Control Initiative. I just zone out whenever the sponsors come on for AGDQ/SGDQ/ESA/NASA events, just like I do for any other advertizements I can't block.
Oh boy, can't wait to see how watered down and soulless this one is!
At least there should be some memorable stuff like last years Chair Sniffer.
This is how I see the events GDQ = a charity event with some speedrunning ESA = a speedrunning event with some charity. Both have their ups and downs (Like when a runner at the last ESA had their spotlight stolen by a guy eating chicken nuggets.) :v:

Bonesaw's run is the best thing to come out of this trainwreck of an event. He not only broke the rules, he shattered them, and got top donations and views for it. We will never again witness the car key saga.
biggest cringe i can remember so far was when one of the runners ousted his trans girlfriend and made her and everyone uncomfortable with "please clap."
I quit watching bonesaw's run partway through. I think it was because he barely said anything about the game. :boxhide:
About the only thing I can really say for this event is that they got rid of Super Metroid and other fun big finishers for an adventure game / RPG finale, and Star Fox 2 in its final form will be there. Not really sure what to think about that.

Every year we lose out on good runs because all anyone cares about is the fucking kill/save the animals incentive. Last year the Metroid incentive was in the thousands before any other incentive even got met. It was actively harming the event because it became a fucking meme.
There's a Link To The Past Randomiser race near the end, which should be a good bit of fun for anybody who hasn't seen the randomiser before. It might sound gimmicky based on the name alone but it's an entertaining and involved run that thrives on races.
