What happened to the little animation details for certain weapons in the 2007 version?
What happened to the little animation details for certain weapons in the 2007 version?
might be due to the transition from Viewmodel+Worldmodel to Combined model
I had to start up tf2 just to double check this stuff
why would valve do things like make water effects look worse?
[editline]28th June 2017[/editline]
the only changes that make sense are ammo boxes on death and the removal of physics on dropped weapons
would've been relevant back in 2010
i don't know what i expected from the title but this is the most nitpicky thing i've seen all month
with a title like this you could show the visual clutter of the cosmetics or adress balance issues or ui or anything that's relevant to the gameplay but this is just "the contrast here changed", as if those are the only things that are different in tf2 from 2007 and now

It's showing more than just change in contrast you know, but anyway. Such thing is completely unneeded as we already have a thread and video on this like 5 days ago

Most of the changes were for the better except for the lighting issues and optimizing a decade old engine is hard enough as it is.
Not one of his best videos. There were far greater issues to address. Also agreed this video is about 5 years late

Oh no! The lighting is slightly different!
It seems like a pattern for Valve to gradually introduce quirks in the games as they get updated.
Most notably is the Half-Life 2 Mac update which had nasty looking skies, and some animations were not playing properly. I also think that the new headcrab shader looks worse.

i've seen it
what i meant to say is that you could compare any other aspect of a game that lived for 10 years that's more important, there's bigger problems with tf2 than missing logos on walls or worse animations
The worst thing that Valve ever did with TF2 was that it took them 4 years to fix the Loch-n-Load's reload animation, thereby getting rid of the one thing I loved to point out that the TF2 team never fixed
I swear that Heavy viewmodel change in the beginning has to be a recent thing, I remember changing to the default minigun all the time because the Iron Curtain had that new weird looking viewmodel where the gun is lower.

That talks about the death of the artstyle through ridiculous, inconsistently-spread and just plain awkward cosmetics.
This video is showing that with the engine changes and updates over the past decade, the game has had some noticeable changes that are arguably worse overall. And i'm willing to bet that the sacrifice for performance over art has not actually helped performance that much at all.
Nitpicking about the knife being smaller for the spies 3rd person model is beyond nitpicking
...I don't understand the purpose of this video..?
Like this is beyond nitpicking, lighting differences? cut down the frames on the animations? is this really what we're gonna complain about now? stuff that I don't think anyone has cared about? because well... why would you? they obviously want to get the game to run on as many computers as possible, especially with it being F2P and all
I knew this video was gonna come out of CrowbCat eventually but I'm still laughing my ass off at it, especially the bit at 1:14 where I, (legitimately for a few seconds,) thought he was talking about the grievous mistake of adding the large medkit to the Intel Room in 2fort. And of course, not to repeat other posters but also the fact that he didn't bother to look through previous updates and figure out that you can pick up weapons now and there's a reason for ammo kits on death is just a sign of laziness.
Like I get that this is what CrowbCat does, but the fact that those are the changes you choose to focus on? Minor lighting differences and less viewmodel detail? I would've taken another video prattling on about dead TF2 art style over this
this is the most nitpicky thing i've seen all month
Is it? He shows off differences, he doesn't complain about it (not even in the description), it's up to the viewer.
Most people are probably well aware of how the game changed in terms of gameplay but as someone who hasn't played the game for a long time, I haven't heard anything about these changes. I might had not even noticed it if I were still playing the game but I'm glad I can see a comparison video, because these changes seem absurd to me.
I mean what are you gaining with this?

Did they ditch the lightwarp texture? It just doesn't look right. Has the performance changed so much due to hats that you need to downgrade the original content ten years later while hardware has improved significantly? Not a rhetorical question, I'm curious.

The buggy also used to be kinda shiny, now it's flat and boring

Spy's knife in 2007 looks ridiculously huge, either he has very small hands or he owns a jumbo sized knife

I don't think anyone is necessarily questioning Valve's graphical downgrades in the sense that they aren't a big deal. Clearly there have been a few questionable downgrades in 10 years.
At least for me, my problem with the video is that, out of all of the things you can complain about with TF2, you choose these? Most of them things you probably wouldn't typically notice unless directly compared like in the video?
TF2 is a shit game today for a lot of reasons, and the graphical downgrades in the last 10 years are not a major contributing factor, IMO. Crowbcat can do better.
most of these "downgrades" are because the game is 10 years old and runs like total ass, and theyre trying to squeeze as much performance out of it as possible
The only valid CrowbCat TF2 nitpick is his hats video:

But he doesn't complain?! As I mentioned, there is no rant claiming "Demoman's bottle doesn't break so the game is ruined!". The description simply says "How did the 2007 version looked (texture, lighting, animation, physics) compared to the most recent build (June 2017)." Completely neutral, even if you might sense a slight, negative undertone to it.
This feels like they rushed out a video about the changes because the TF2 team posted a big post with weapon changes. A reversion of how the game looks would be welcome, however, I find it to be a shame people have forgotten the weapon changes we've gotten over the years.

Lol this is so semantic. If he isn't trying to make a point then why even make a video?
Why is everyone saying this video is criticizing? I know it's crowbcat and he does that, but this video seems to be purely informative.
It'd be more relevant if it was a bit earlier, not now really.
It also feels weird since i own the PS3 version of Orange Box

Because it's interesting? I bet half of us didn't even know these changes existed throughout the years.
CrowbCat has a habit of making his videos very "complainy" though. Some of them valid, and some of them less so, I think.
Why does the shading of viewmodels look so much simpler now?
