Gotta love all the little nods, like Sonic's original rabbit design concept, and the animation art style seeming to derive itself from the Mega Drive comic special. If only the trailer was in a full 60FPS, but whatever the case, pretty sure i'm gonna pre-order this one.
That elevator panel only having the classic 2d sonics on it was a nice touch.
That elevator panel only having the classic 2d sonics on it was a nice touch.
Except for CD which got shown its signature level in the same trailer :s:
It's actually kind of sad to think that something that gets the point this much might end up being ignored in the future I hope that they continue to get the point and stuff like Rise of Lyric never again happens
I hope that they continue to get the point and stuff like Rise of Lyric never again happens
I really hope we will not get stuck in the loop of nostalgia-based games
God yes the art style reminds me so much of the Sonic CD intro which was fucking awesome.
I think the fact that this game exists at all proves that someone in Sega understands that people just want classic 2d sonic back.
Yeah, though Sega has a habit of doing something that's a good decision and then not running with it and basically forgetting what made people like that game I want them to basically just get the point for every game they make from now on, rather than create something that is just them wildly missing the point
Yeah, though Sega has a habit of doing something that's a good decision and then not running with it and basically forgetting what made people like that game I want them to basically just get the point for every game they make from now on, rather than create something that is just them wildly missing the point
Hopefully if mania makes enough money they'll stick with it, of course its sega and that isn't a guarantee. But you never know, the sonic franchise has been in a weird spot for well over a decade and mania is the first game I've seen in years that seems to have people genuinely excited.

Sonic Team didn't want to keep doing the same things over and over and thus potentially suffer stagnation - just look at Sonic '06 pretty much recycling Sonic Adventure's formula on a larger scale, which got torn down due to development split-ups, rushed scheduling and being too ambitious for its own good from the start. Unfortunately, by the time of Lost World they also demonstrated readily that for all their fears of stagnation, they also weren't very good at solidifying new ideas and it was more like throwing darts at a board. Now we're at Sonic Forces, which is being overwhelmed by the Mania hype train because people feel Forces isn't doing much besides its different tone and the new custom hero thing to really stand out from the other Boost games. Two mega fans who've been making refined Sonic ports, and a comic artist that has pretty much gained a career years after doing random Sonic comics, have pretty much usurped the series owner's own work in terms of what people want.
I glanced at the title and misread it as "Santa Monica" and I thought they were making a video game about California but I was disappointing. Oh well that'll teach me to look at things at a glance.

Last time they've been in USA they have made Sonic Adventure 1/2. As I have said before, I hope they will not start making endless versions of sonic mania. Never been a die-hard fan of 2D sonic games.
The animator who did this also did this comic way back: [t]http://orig12.deviantart.net/963e/f/2010/003/8/0/oh__that_eggman_by_mechanical_penguin.jpg[/t] He did some stuff for the Archie Comics too, iirc.
Christ that music was fucking awful though
music is amazing my dude
Soundtrack once again sounds like its gonna be a hit! say what you want about some of the previous sonic games but the soundtrack for them has always been on point. And i fucking LOVE that artstyle!
Christ that music was fucking awful though
while not exactly something i'll be humming or remembering, it's not bad
I just hate whatever that loud synth is called.
Not a fan of the music myself. It sounds like the Scott Pilgrim game. I'd prefer if it took more cues from the soundtracks of the originals.
God i fucking love this music. I really loved some of the songs in the newer games like It's happy, fast paced and just fun to play to.

Toei Sonic is probably my favorite design out of all the Sonic's. I just can't explain why I love it so much
I like all the vocal songs in Sonic games, I wonder if Sonic Mania has one.
Except for CD which got shown its signature level in the same trailer :s:
True, but I believe they're representing CD with the artstyle (and Stardust Speedway).
I like all the vocal songs in Sonic games, I wonder if Sonic Mania has one.
It wouldn't be entirely unprecedented, considering Sonic CD and Sonic 2 both kicked off Sonic songs with lyrics in the 2D era. But I feel like most people associate vocal songs in Sonic games with Crush 40 and the 3D era, more than they think about 90's Pop and 2D Sonic.

Of course, that was before Tails was changed from a girl to a boy during development, and it did fool me the first time I saw the Sonic 2 Title Screen, the sprite of Tails really looks feminine in my eyes.
