I always had a fear of lifts after I got stuck in one. I only got over that when I was about 16.
In reality, elevators are safe. The guy standing on top of it was breaking the safety mechanism on purpose (the one that stops it freefalling)

Yes, if the power is out/emergency button is pushed and you can get a good enough grip. Otherwise, the hydraulics control the doors opening and closing force them shut when the elevator is traveling.

uh, this looks like an elevator that was going to be demolished anyway. the fact that the camera was positioned where it was, plus you can see the tool the guy is using to tap the structure at the very top of the screen. it didn't even look like it had the main cable needed for transportation at that point

That also looks like a very dangerous way to unstick/demolish an elevator, I mean they left the guy standing on just a couple inches of track in the middle of the shaft.
