Another great Vsauce video
holy fuck this is so unsettling to listen too/watch augh god i can't feel my hands
I wonder if it would be legal to eat printed human flesh.
Informative, and just a little bit creepy.
This was a great video to eat dinner to.
I wonder if it would be legal to eat printed human flesh.
Since it isn't actual human flesh, or printed using human protein, probably.
Since it isn't actual human flesh, or printed using human protein, probably.
It still need a copy of human DNA, no?
It still need a copy of human DNA, no?
That doesn't make it illegal. Cannibalism, in the US at least, is only illegal if someone dies, or otherwise didn't consent. You could, theoretically, eat the limbs of someone, so long as they survived and didn't press charges, and break no laws. If the person doesn't press charges, there is nothing police can do about it, and even then, how would they know. The video shows multiple instances of people consenting to cannibalism and it being done perfectly legally. [editline]21st January 2014[/editline] Cannibalism is only illegal when someone dies (or if they do not consent) because it is implied that people cannot consent to dying. (whether or not that is true is debatable, but that's just what the law implies) this is only in the US based on federal law, not including state law (crimes against nature (sodomy is illegal in this way in certain states) and such) or other nations
I don't understand how anyone can even contemplate eating another human. Not in the name of art, not because of curiosity. It's disgusting and anyone who takes part in it is disgusting unless it's in incredibly severe cases like desert islands.

Granted, I would never, but I am curious as to how it is disgusting in any way beyond "it's just gross."
Because you are eating another sentient being. If I was invited to dinner sat down and started eating, and about halfway through was like 'this steak is nice, where did you get it?' 'Bob' 'Bob's a nice guy, but I didn't know he sold steaks.' 'He doesn't' I would throw up immediately as soon as they said it was human meat. I probably would never be invited to dinner again but my point still stands.

I don't know man. Cannibalism just creeps me out no end.
Human meat has also been known as 'long pig.'
How is it disgusting other than because it's taboo? Granted, I would never, but I am curious as to how it is disgusting in any way beyond "it's just gross."
In the same way people where so disgusted when people found out their beef mince was actually horse. (Which i found ridiculous, horse meat is delicious!) People just don't like the idea of eating something their not used to seeing as food. I probably wouldn't have to many qualms past the initial queezyness of knowing the food i was about to eat contained human, but if it was given willingly and presented to me, then i might be tempted to see what it tastes like. I'm not saying i would go out seeking it, thats just odd in my mind.
Because you are eating another sentient being.
People eat dog, whale, dolphin, pig, etc. They are highly intelligent in comparison with most of the animal kingdom. Dolphins have self-awareness and can differentiate themselves from other dolphins if shown in a mirror or a video. Pigs can remember individuals and feel a range of emotions. They all feel pain. The only difference from them and people, from the sentience standpoint, is that you understand the cries a person makes when you butcher them.
eating human flesh can give you a whole bunch of nasties, we dont eat it only because its icky

Bit of an urban legend actually. Eating human brain can get you some disgusting side effects, (prions and the like) but there isn't any irrefutable evidence that eating the muscle or organs of a healthy human poses any health risks. Obviously eating someone with a disease will have massive risk of transferring that disease if the meat is not cooked, but this applies to consuming any raw meat. There is nothing inherently dangerous specifically to cannibalism, barring brain diseases. (mad cow disease is a prion disease that affects cows) It is also estimated that a large proportion of the UK population has Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease, another prion disease spread in a similar manner; or through any brain matter contact. There was a large push to prevent blood donations from people who had visited the UK because it was/is estimated that 1:2000 carried the disease. (from mad cows, if anyone remembers that scare)
Mmm... I really like Viel. Is it wrong that I'm now curious?
Nope.
The video actually made me cringe pretty bad. Eating human flesh is disgusting for countless reasons, not because its fucking taboo.
The video actually made me cringe pretty bad. Eating human flesh is disgusting for countless reasons, not because its fucking taboo.
Explain.
The video actually made me cringe pretty bad. Eating human flesh is disgusting for countless reasons, not because its fucking taboo.
Oh come on, it's not THAT bad. I mean if I was at gunpoint and I had to either play bad rats or eat human meat, I'd get myself a fork and a knife. [sp]i'm kinda curious anyways guys back me up here[/sp]
Oh come on, it's not THAT bad. I mean if I was at gunpoint and I had to either play bad rats or eat human meat, I'd get myself a fork and a knife. [sp]i'm kinda curious anyways guys back me up here[/sp]
While I wouldn't say I'm curious, as I probably wouldn't if given the option, I just don't see any actual reason not to do it, beyond squeamishness. People calling it disgusting for no other reason than that it's human aren't really saying much.
Explain.
I think it's the morality behind it. We see other human beings as equals in terms of the food chain. It's often the case with social animals. That's why cannibalism is labeled as such, not just for instances in human society. Its unorthodox behavior in general, though many species do practice it. Personally, it's rather disturbing and disgusting to think that, really, all flesh and blood creatures are just slabs of meat, organs, and blood on the inside. Eating human flesh, regardless of where it came from or how it was acquired, is super fucked up and gross as far as I'm concerned.
I don't understand how anyone can even contemplate eating another human. Not in the name of art, not because of curiosity. It's disgusting and anyone who takes part in it is disgusting unless it's in incredibly severe cases like desert islands.
Personally speaking once you get over the taboo fence it's not that big of a deal. Despite our sentience once that piece of meat is taken out of the person's body it's just flesh that can be cooked and then digested without worries. For example a human placenta can be preserved and cooked without any harm to the person giving it away plus it contains quite a bit of nutritious things like vitamins and protein. I don't consider the placenta sentient so I really have no trouble eating it. If the placenta was still attached to the person then yeah, I'd feel like throwing up too. If someone offered me the chance to eat human flesh that was acquired with full consent without any tricks or blackmail I would take the chance. It'd have to be cooked really well so I would enjoy it but really at the end of the day it's going to just be a fucking steak.
I think it's the morality behind it. We see other human beings as equals in terms of the food chain. It's often the case with social animals.
So you're calling it disgusting because of morality, a purely subjective thing, imposed by society, and not based on facts. Isn't that the definition of taboo? Social animals kill one another for food all the time, cannibalism in the animal kingdom is note unheard of at all.
That's why cannibalism is labeled as such, not just for instances in human society. Its unorthodox behavior in general, though many species do practice it.
This is sorta contradictory. A ton of species practice it, so it's not really unorthodox. Not only this, but humans are by no means restricted to the evolutionary development of other animals; we're advanced enough to know how to thrive as a species without the "risk of cannibalism destroying the species." (which doesn't even happen in nature)
Personally, it's rather disturbing and disgusting to think that, really, all flesh and blood creatures are just slabs of meat, organs, and blood on the inside. Eating human flesh, regardless of where it came from or how it was acquired, is super fucked up and gross as far as I'm concerned.
Humans are animals. Humans have muscles and organs that all mammals do. Biologically, there is no difference, and the only inherent risks are related to preconditions like diseases, and the scary prions, but those are risks that exist for every animal that consumes its own species. (see. Mad Cow Disease) It may be gross because you think it is, but biologically, ethically, morally, I don't see how it's gross if the participating parties are consenting. It's far less gross to eat the placenta of a healthy woman who donated it, than to inhumanely shove masses of cattle into cramped quarters (while fed meat and corn, both of which help spread the prion diseases that cause Mad Cow and are awful for the animals) until they are tortured to death. Ethically, we do far worse to other people and animals than to eat their bits. (as long as it wasn't through ill gotten means) Again, I would never eat human bits ever, but I see nothing disgusting once you get past the "ew" factor. As long as no one is getting hurt, and everyone involved is knowing about it, there really isn't a problem. Meat is meat, there really isn't anything more to it.
I still haven't found out what's the song that starts playing at 8:40 (earlier actually), and no it's not Chudnow. I don't suppose anyone knows it?
