That is so cool. I want to see lots of them driving around at once to see how they interact.
Looks like they still need to work on making the detector ontop smaller. I imagine in the future they will be just a small bump ontop no larger than a taxi sign.
If this takes old people off the road then im all for it!
It's really amazing what technology can do, too bad I can't see the government ever allowing these to become street legal, much less competing car companies letting this ever see the light of day.

???
I've heard of this concept of this car but I didn't think they were already this far ahead with it. Incredible.

No dude trust me, "the man" is gonna put this idea down
it's all a conspiracy
I think they should fire their design team, that thing is hideous.
This wouldnt work in the EU.
According to law you need to have the control of your car at any time.
Great, when I'm old I wont be able to burn around in a convertible like the elderly of today, I'll be forced to shit in a shitty little pod because I'm sure they'll decide can't be trusted behind the wheel.
It's like a personal taxi; I for one prefer to be able to drive if I want, not just be driven.
I don't feel like this sort of tech is empowering, it takes the control out of the individuals hands and other people decide what's best.

Damn, surely there is nothing that can be done
sorry EU

My eyesight is just bad enough that I fail the vision tests at the DMV (with correction). If I had something like this, I wouldn't need to rely on other people to get around.
It's not like automated vehicles are going to kill recreational and sport driving. Quit being paranoid.
This is an awesome idea. But question, who would be responsible car accidents? Like what if an animal quickly ran across the road or something?

just install volvos emergency brakes and youre good to go

Looks like that cause it's easy to manufacture and replace for a prototype vehicle, a few bits of curved metal (is it even metal?) and bam.

I think that is actually a really good question. I'm more than certain that google would make a lengthy contract if this ever became a public thing. When it comes to actual coverage, the UPS driver and UPS are still held liable in court. I think Uber might have the same implementation.

Although I now wonder whether this is really that safe. Sure it works perfectly, but what if a bird shits on the sensor while you are on the highway?

I imagine the cars would 'talk' to each other, and have a maximum distance that they can be to each other for the speed they are traveling at. This way if one car has to emergency stop, then the car behind it will also be able to stop in time, theoretically.
Which is why it is never your fault if you get rear-ended. Other car should have been further away.
In future, everyone will be happy and joke about text and driving.

it's extremely damaging to the truck's suspension though. drum brake warpage, and all the goodies associated with extremely hard braking.

Still better than crashing

technology these days is all about doing less for ourselves, when we're older we'll not have to do anything and it will be as boring as fuck.

When auto-mobiles came into the picture people didn't just say "yeah fuck horses you're never allowed to ride them again"

There is already software that can write your FP posts for you and garry is considering making it mandatory

Yeah but we will be able to hang out in virtual reality all day long with neural interfaces. :v:
Not having any manual control over your vehicle is a bit worrying. Also I'd like to see how this works in a real world scenario before I'm convinced. A car driving in circles in a parking lot isn't really a good test to prove to consumers that this is the future.

It's not supposed to look nice it's a prototype.
