Skip 3 minutes in. Damn this guy was lucky.
damn, don't wear loose clothing like that in a work environment
This is horrifying, but it was still pretty comical how his jacket and shirt just exploded off.
It's crazy that it took them almost 20 seconds to turn the thing off. A $5 e-stop button would've probably been a smart investment.
I thought emergency power cutoff buttons were a legal requirement everywhere. and if they aren't then they should be.
Come on, rule 1 of using a lathe is no gloves or long sleeves.
Come on, rule 1 of using a lathe is no gloves or long sleeves.
Wearing long sleeves near a lathe is a plan for disaster. You shouldn't even wear loose jewelry near them.
I used to use a lathe with my dad for turning pipes or cutting metals to precision, we used it a lot to make our own Tesla Coil which was so much fun. The best thing I ever made for myself though were stunt pegs for my bmx at the time. They were stunt pegs off an old bmx and they were super heavy and clunky, but I cut them down so many mm and shortened them. Was so much fun but I remember how scary using a lathe was, and how obvious it was to be very careful about what your doing and never were loose clothing. We have a really old industrial lathe like the one in the video ( I still have it in my garage it works a beaut) and my Dad made a quick killswitch on the side because with those ones you have levers and such, it's just a very obvious thing to do when working with them, also the problem was how long it took for the other works to cut the lathe off, I don't even think anyone was present in the room when it all goes off because of how long they took to reach him. So really if it was not one thing it was another, he was unsupervised and obviously inexperienced. I don't even really blame the guy who gets hurt, I blame the workers around him while he was doing that and the people who's company it is. I bet this guy got no compensation for it either.

WHY instead of moving did he just lean over?
Another. You can tell by the thumbnail what's gonna happen.
WHY instead of moving did he just lean over?
He was strapped to the metal beam, as well as having no balance.
Yeah lathes are ruthless machines, high speed and enough torque to move a mountain. It wouldn't even notice you were there if you got stuck in it. Honestly the guy was an idiot to wear long sleeves and gloves while using a lathe, he is incredibly lucky. I love using lathes though, there is something very satisfying about machining with them.
Search on LiveLeak to see what happens when idiots aren't as lucky as this guy is. If you don't want to. Just imagine a torso half way in and Delicious spaghetti every where else.

These idiots don't deserve to be anywhere near such powerful machinery. Dude could have easily had his leg busted in half or even ripped off.

I can't remember how many times he said his arm broke, but I think it was 16 times. The paramedics had to unwrap his arm from the damn thing. I'm still surprised he didn't lose it.
Man, it goes to show how quickly industrial accidents can happen. His shirt was off in a flash there.
I was once pushed ONTO a lathe by a not-so-careful fellow student, luckily none of my clothing got stuck. I got really afraid of lathes since then though, and haven't used one since.

Thought it would be funny to jab me between the ribs behind me with a key fob he had just made. Hurt like hell, I jumped forward without thinking and got my arm near the chuck. Fucking hated that guy, I damn near panicked.

yikes, his face was damn close to the spinning part! i don't want to know what his face would become if it had touched that.
whats that dark stuff he gets on his cheek, is that blood?
whats that dark stuff he gets on his cheek, is that blood?
Yeah the guy got some pretty bad injuries on his hand and arm, dangerous machines man.
Yeah the guy got some pretty bad injuries on his hand and arm, dangerous machines man.
Very dangerous, and the second you become comfortable around them that's when they get ya. Even Adam Savage says they are terrifying :v: (At about 3:00)

Do not google image search "lathe accident". :pwn:
My dad uses a lathe from the late 1910s (all the motor and electronic parts are upgraded to modern standards of course). I won't go near that fucking thing with my long hair. I cringe when I even look at it. If my ponytail was to dangle near it for a second it would drag me over the table and break my neck and if I'm lucky my scalp would be ripped from my skull before that happens. If my head isn't ripped off altogether that is. I've seen the videos, these machines obliterate human bodies in less than a second, you're lucky if you lose an appendage before your entire body gets wrung like a wet towel. I can't get over how scared I am of these things. One second there's a human, the next second there's 150 pounds of ground beef
i use a lathe daily at work and it scares the shit out of me every time. ive heard of people losing fingers and such in the past in my factory. i just made the mistake of clicking on that NSFW link. i never want to use one again.. :|

I'm so happy I am not studying to a line of work involving laythes.
