College Humor is right some of these people who do appear on TED are nutters.
I have to say sometimes the people on those talks do give out this vibe but so far the ones I saw had some logic behind them.

The TEDx talks are usually really awful, don't watch those. They aren't organised by TED at all, they just give a free license to people who want to hold an event under their name with a bunch of restrictions applied to it.
