'American Reflexxx is a short film documenting a social experiment that took place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Director Alli Coates captured performance artist Signe Pierce as she strutted down a busy oceanside street in stripper garb and a reflective mask. The pair agreed not to communicate until the experiment was completed, but never anticipated the horror that would unfold in under an hour. The result is a heart wrenching technicolor spectacle that raises questions about gender stereotypes, mob mentality, and violence in America.'
how is this an experiment? Where's the control, the male/masculine, without plates, Where's different settings, point of being at night, other countries hypothesized, or even different urban areas? mob mentality is mentioned, but why not discuss diffusion of responsibility or the bystander effect? It's bad what happened to the person, but the question has been answered, just read psychology textbooks. If this isn't an experiment, it's a statement meant to appeal to emotion/pity to drive a point which is biased and may not have anything to deal with violence in america, gender stereotypes. This does raise concern over people to make kissing pranks/social experiments when they are no such thing. If there's a higher authority promoting such behavior it would explain such lengths, referring to experiments based on Milgram's famous one.
That glitching/skipping around gets really annoying after the first minute or so, imo. The content itself is interesting though, I guess. Not really going to comment on the objective merit of it, as I don't think I'm qualified to speak on it. But in truth, what gets me is the youtube comments. There's commentors decrying the people booing the actress, but also commentors (sometimes one and the same) threatening physical violence against the crowd, and calling [sp]the lady who pushed the actress down[/sp] a fat pig and a "drunk redneck oompa loompa". There's commentors saying this is blatant misogyny despite most of the people harassing her think she's a male cross-dresser (though, admittedly, there are moments where she gets cat calls, even the description says it's about gender stereotypes, not specifically misogyny) It's kind of sad to me, because part of the ordeal is that the actress was out of place and not "correct" to the standards that the crowd had, and because of that the actress was ostracized and assaulted. Yet, it's also funny to me that people who say they have gotten so much out of this video still fail to realize they're only perpetuating what they are claiming to despise.
the crowd, and calling the lady who pushed the actress down a fat pig and a "drunk redneck oompa loompa"
violence begets violence.
what the fuck is wrong with these people
what the fuck is wrong with these people
I don't know, it feels like people like this forget you're even a person with emotions and not some disgusting curiosity.
This is fucking disgusting
Regardless of whether or not it's a true experiment, it still effectively shows the mob mentality that has become socially acceptable. I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I was disgusted when the water was thrown and when she was pushed. The heckling made it even worse.
Poor soul, after such treatment, no wonder he became Cobra Commander we know today.
I had no clue what was going on for half of this because of the stupid glitching and stuff
I don't get it, was the push staged/part of the act?
I mean, they are kids, but a nice beating would teach them.
Of course it was some middle aged slag with gammon calves and khaki shorts that pushed her
I don't get it, was the push staged/part of the act?
No, everything about it was not staged, it's a simple stroll through myrtle beach dressed like this.
Of course this happens in Myrtle Beach SC, its the only place where the dumbest of the dumb can afford to go on vacation.
I'll be the devils avocado and say the behavior of a lot of those people were the result of having no idea what was going on, not going to try to defend the violence against her; but when she received abuse she sexually gratified the crowd. It's easy to look back at this with the context "this was a social experiment" but she tainted the results of that experiment
The mob definitely would've had more sensitive emotions to project onto that figure if it wasn't dancing around the corners like a hooker from GTA..
Is there a version of this that wasn't edited to be made un-fucking-watchable?
I don't understand what's going on, why is everyone acting like an idiot?

There is a factor that wasn't in the 60s civil rights movement is "is this hole thing an art piece and she's faking falling down".
social experiment
oh fuck off, i hate this term. somehow just doing something in public and having somebody film it now constitutes an experiment
oh fuck off, i hate this term. somehow just doing something in public and having somebody film it now constitutes an experiment
I wish they hadn't used that term. One of my biggest fears when it comes to this video is that everyone's going to focus on the fuckin' editing and description rather than y'know, the numerous kinds of harassment and horrid bigotry present in the video.
I mean, they are kids, but a nice beating would teach them.
Is this "nice beating" proposal mainly to give you satisfaction or what? if it's turely to get them to change their minds, I'm pretty sure it's going to backfire and make them think of you as some crazy dude that beats people.

I had no idea what was going on, what the message/expected result was, who were involved with the "experiment," and what I was supposed to learn.
I recommend this also.
Did they press charges for assault and battery? I mean, it's on film.
Holy shit is this actually how civilized people behave in a first world country? It's like they're afraid of what they don't know. They can't identify whether she's a man or woman and it confuses them and makes them violent, because they fear the unknown or something.
I don't get the total hysteria over a sci fi mask and whore heels. It was like everyone there totally had nothing else to do. If you dropped her in 17th century Salem she'd get less of a reaction.

The message is useless if it's lost in all the other crap shoved into the video.
Really sad honestly, pure ignorance. Major props to the actor for staying in their "role" and not flipping shit.
bad editing with visual/sound effects aside, its pretty crappy that an entire mob of people big enough to create a protest was formed solely to follow a woman wearing a mask, and because some of them thought it was weird/scary/funny, they harassed and assaulted her that conclusion though, everyone just runs away when she turns around clapping her high heels, what the hell
