This game lost my interest when they nerfed movement abilities and such into nigh uselessness just to make people use the damn hovercar things. If you have to nerf a bunch of shit to make some other mechanic seem desirable, you're doing it wrong. Like, seriously, when you nerf things so hard that it makes traversing and exploring rough-terrained planets an incredible chore rather than exciting and engaging, you've gone too far. (It's been a while since I've tried to play though, did they ever end up reverting that?)
after 9000 years in development, hopefully it will have been worth the weight
I was told this was Terraria in space and it played nothing like Terraria. I still feel cheated from early access.
I was told this was Terraria in space and it played nothing like Terraria. I loved terraria and I thought this would end up as its successor but they decided for a more rpg route with lots of static structures and quests. not my cup of tea.
I don't think it really matters what it was supposed to be, because I don't think they really ever got any core gameplay concept nailed down in the first place.
I remember when they made a huge update to the combat the combat that was actually somewhat interesting by removing contact damage and adding moster attacks, only for then doing a complete 180 and seemingly abandoning that line of work.
I've always found starbound to just be worse overall than Terraria. Starbound has infinite planets and tons of planet types but they're all just throwaway resource mines, compared to Terraria where you come to know and love/hate your world throughout the playthrough.

It got worse EVERY TIME
Ultimately, I always felt that Starbound failed because it didn't copy Terraria enough.
Was very interested in this game's development when it was first shown in 2012. When it was in the Early Access stage though it was unbelievably barebones and very likely still is. As usual: don't buy into the hype train no matter how "cool" even a single feature looks, and remain further cautious of Kickstarter backed games as four times out of five they'll fail to provide.
This is the problem I have with early access, it feels like a lot of games never make the leap to professional quality and the devs end up just giving up and saying its "released"
I help crowd-fund this years ago. Back when the first early access was released, I saw how much people were complaining, even then. I made the decision to let it sit in my library and not try it until it was done, so I wouldn't get burned out on it before they changed/removed/added whatever they wanted. So despite it being in my library for god knows how many years, I'm going to boot it up for the first time today. I hope it's worth it.
I honestly love starbound for what it is, this guy nailed it down perfectly.
I always read about the game being so empty, but how bad is it? I absolutely loved the game when it first released and managed to accumulate 92 hours of playtime in just a few days. I was hooked. eventually I lost interest since I burnt myself out and I haven't touched it since its release in early access. even newly released into early access, I was having a blast. the only real complaint I have which is probably invalid now, I don't know, was the fact that there was absolutely no reason to build on planets.

I hope it's worth it.
I tried it earlier I never installed and subsequently uninstalled a game faster in my life
Really surprised with the response the game has gotten here. Although I was kinda pissed off with how inaccurate the time estimates the developers gave were, I personally really enjoyed and continue to enjoy the game, both when it was in very early access and even more now. It's clear the developers were somewhat unsure of what their end goal was for the gameplay at first, but I ended up liking what they came up with. I can see why people would be disappointed if they expected "terraria in space" though. I remember when FP had a dedicated server with a bunch of players, that was a total blast.
well that wasnt a very helpful comment
then allow me to be more clear: the game is still shallow trash completely overshadowed by terraria in every way
No matter how boring it get's I can't hate Starbound, It's my first PC game and that's kind of a big deal to me.
can someone explain why, in their opinion, terraria is better? I just want to understand (I promise)
Game is really wonderful so far. They pretty much added everything I wanted since I played it last.
can someone explain why, in their opinion, terraria is better? I just want to understand (I promise)
I sorta feel like they're both great for different reasons. Terraria has a lot more interesting mechanics, while starbound has more exploration and atmosphere. Just depends what you're into.
I honestly love starbound for what it is, this guy nailed it down perfectly.
Same for me, and for 10 bucks that's not bad in the slightest.
can someone explain why, in their opinion, terraria is better? I just want to understand (I promise)
A single 1.0 Terraria world has more depth than an entire galaxy or more in Starbound. There is nothing interesting to find outside of scripted areas. Every planet may have a building or two underground, but they're always just full of junk, which is pathetic in a game about mining planets. Dungeons are empty and devoid of loot, and just full of enemies who benefit way more from ranged weapons than you could ever. Oh, speaking of combat? It sucks, period. They have NO idea how to make 2d combat not terrible, guns? Terrible. Melee? Enjoy getting stunlocked or hit multiple times really quickly, or getting like 4 debuffs at once. Want to swing your sword? Enjoy your terrible range or really bizarre and awful angles that you're stuck with to fight.
I'd like it more if it didn't have quests to get stuff and upgrades and all that. Theres a whole universe to be exploring, but I have to go and do some random thing so i can get something or go somewhere. I'd like it better if it just had a "free-play sandboxxy" sort of mode where the quests are shoved to the side, slapped on a planet and it tells you "go explore!". With quests, its not a great exploration, its a ride through stuff. Sure, once the quests are done and you have everything unlocked you can do whatever, but it's not the same as being thrust into a universe you know nothing about and you explore it for what it's environments and stories.
Well I'm done with attempting to play this, it's better than it was back when you had to take a quest to make some guy a spoon for his coffee, but that's not saying much.
I feel like Starbound is a game that would be better with a little more structure and focus I like having a universe to explore and having a lot out there, but nothing feels personal or designed for me to play it. Planet's are almost entirely uninhabited and when they are it's just a few NPCs walking around with not much to say. The world doesn't feel very believable to me. I really enjoyed playing the missions with pre-built levels cause it felt like a real level to me with a goal in mind. The NPCs involved also felt like real people and not robots programming to say one thing only. The grind for new equipment is also boring and uninteresting. What I love about Terraria is that it never inhibited you, and allowed you to grow powerful without being corralled into easier levels until you get appropriate armor for harder levels. You got stong and the enemies got just as strong to combat it.
Starbound may not be what we were promised or expected exactly, but it's by no means a bad game. It's still a fun little science fiction sandbox with a lot to do/collect and plenty of room for creativity. There are more popular games with worse mechanics and less content It's also got some of the best atmospheric music in a video game. It's up there right beside Elder Scrolls and Guild Wars
No matter how boring it get's I can't hate Starbound, It's my first PC game and that's kind of a big deal to me.
I'm sorry for your loss. But yeah, finally I can download the DRM free copy I bought from the humble store.
Is Terraria worth a go? I've always thought Starbound and/or Terraria looks really awesome. I'm not sure if it's worth to buy, I think it's pretty cheap so maybe doesn't matter too much. Anyone have any thoughts?
Yea I have looked at it before, just never bought it for some unknown reason. Thanks for the answer, will pick this game up asap.
