This is basically an ad for a History Channel documentary, so yeah I doubt this is real at all.
BIG if true.
We already know what probably happened to her. After WW2 a bunch of American GIs found her belongings in a hut on some Japanese island and the officers told them about 2 Caucasians they had captured back in the 30s who they thought were spies.
There's also this from 2012:

Yeah, but the picture sort of confirms it

While a lot of that evidence already existed, the point of the video is that they now have a photo that likely confirms that story.
If this was actually real it would not be airing on the History Channel first.
She died after the crash, the "captured by the japanese" is an old conspiracy theory with flimsy to no backing.

This isn't like the normal Ancient Aliens shit that they feature on the History Channel. You're acting like the photo looks like this

Because it's free advertising for the history channel lol, make a sensational claim on an hour long ~exclusive~ documentary that news channels will pick up on. last week history aired pirates of the caribbean (lol), they're not to be taken seriously as a source of historical knowledge. A&E knew exactly what they were doing when they decided to fund this
I thought it was established that she was abducted by aliens and taken to the Delta Quadrant as a slave, and then put in stasis?
I think regardless of what actually killed her it's a pretty sound theory that the Electra wound up in Japanese hands before being cut up for scrap. We know roughly (or depending on who you ask, exactly) where the aircraft went down and there's been no trace of it even under all kinds of intensive high-tech search equipment. We are still raising aircraft from this period from the ocean floor and restoring them for flight, so I don't buy that the entire Electra just magically disintegrated and didn't leave behind its big old radials or anything recognizable. The Electra was a high tech airplane in its day and the Japanese certainly could have learned some lessons from it before destroying it to hide their treachery.
They evaluated an Electra and liked it but didn't have time to study it or reverse engineer it. The value of the opportunity to take Earhart's nearly intact plane for study may easily have outweighed the Japanese navy's scant morals. Whether they actually killed Earhart and Noonan or just didn't report having found them - who knows? If the records were destroyed during the war, there doesn't have to be any modern conspiracy or coverup ongoing - the information just doesn't exist anymore and that's that.

The hair on the woman in the photo is also wrong. I doubt this.
The strongest theory right now is probably the Gardner island theory, but there just isn't really enough information yet to say which one is right.

Maybe, but you're sourcing a website that I've never heard and I'd bet 99% of people also have never heard of.
The man by himself may or may not be Fred Noonan. (facial recognition says it is.)
By herself, the woman may or may not be Amelia Earhart. (silhouettte recognition says it is.)
By itself, the plane may or may not belong to the people in question. (However, it is a damaged Lockheed Electra 10-E being towed by a ship.)
At the end of all this were not going to have hard facts of anything, rather just some (possibly strong) evidence to support a theory. Even if that evidence is legit, you can still decide to think its total bs. That is totally up to you.
I wonder what happened to the Electra since she was captured, it would be amazing if parts of the hull where laying around somewhere.
Trying to act like some woman whose face we can't even see is Earhart is silly enough, but are they actually claiming that you can see her plane in the photo too? That's the icing on the cake.

I mean it's more than just acting if they showed how they made their guesses. It's not like a complete shot in the dark.

People see what they want to see. This kind of thing happens all the time where someone says they have proof that so and so happened and even if that proof can't necessarily be denied, it almost never ends up confirmed either. Unless they actually find something beyond just the photograph, I don't believe it.

Well, I'm not really believing it at the moment either, but I just meant that they at least have some reasoning behind it. Though their reasoning could be inaccurate I guess.
The History Channel plans to air its documentary, Amelia Earhart: The Lost Evidence, about the photo this Sunday, and you’ve no doubt seen the breathless coverage already. The central claim is that when Earhart disappeared in 1937 she actually survived a crash and was captured by the Japanese in the Marshall Islands. The claim hinges on the fact that this photo from the National Archives was taken in 1937. But Gizmodo contacted the US National Archives, and they don’t have any date for the photo.
“Despite the headlines, there is no confirmation on either a date or content in the photograph from the National Archives,” James P. Pritchett, the director of public and media communications at the National Archives, told Gizmodo.
“Our archivists have looked at all the materials filed with the photo in question and found no additional information about the photograph other than the caption that was marked on the image,” Pritchett continued.
That caption reads:
PL - MARSHALL ISLANDS, JALUIT ATOLL, JALUIT ISLAND. ONI # 14381 JALUIT HARBOR.
It’s not clear what “PL” means, but there’s no other evidence at the National Archives that this photo is from 1937. The Daily Mail claimed that their own investigator (an unnamed source) went to the National Archives a year ago and discovered that the photo was actually from 1940, but the US National Archives tells Gizmodo that there’s no indication that this year is accurate either.

A photo of a woman claimed to be missing US aviator Amelia Earhart is said today to be proof that she survived a crash into the Pacific Ocean 80 years ago - but the picture has a major flaw, it can be revealed.
The picture showing a group of people - allegedly showing Miss Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan - on a jetty on a Pacific island back in 1937 is the focus of a sensational TV documentary now being shown in the United States.
But MailOnline had access to this same picture a year ago - and an investigation in the US National Archives established that the photo was among a batch taken after 1940, at least three years after she disappeared.
MailOnline's investigation a year ago also concluded that if Miss Earhart and Noonan had been captured by the Japanese after surviving the crash of the Elektra the suspected spies would have been under guard, yet there is no sign of any Japanese soldier on the jetty.
Referring to a woman in a tropical island dress and to other people who are locals, Mr Campbell adds: 'The group on the dock appears to be out for a Sunday stroll, or awaiting someone's arrival from one of the ships in the harbour.'

While there are many theories that have emerged regarding Earheart's disappearance, Gillespie and TIGHAR don't stand behind this one.
Gillespie, who has known about the photograph that the History Channel reveals it evaluated for about a year in the upcoming documentary, told TMZ that "there were a lot of mercenaries in that area at the time ... so it could be any white woman in the pic — the features aren't recognizable."
The Earhart expert claims that "she would not have had enough fuel to get to the Marshall Islands, where the photo was allegedly taken," primarily because her final signal was discovered roughly 100 miles from that location.
It's worth noting that the photo also doesn't match smoothly with the documentary's captive theory. Gillespie clarified that "none of the alleged captors [in the photo] have guns or look threatening." Two Caucasians pictured appear to be engaging in casual activity, hanging freely on a pier at the Marshall Islands.
Nonetheless, Gillespie and fellow members of TIGHAR continue to stand behind their initial theory, which is that Earhart survived the 1937 airplane crash and died as a castaway on Nikumaroro, Kiribati, an island located in the western Pacific Ocean.
Whether The History Channel or TIGHAR's theories on Earheart's disappearance are accurate are to be determined. However, TIGHAR has had previous success in unearthing pertinent evidence regarding the 1937 incident, including bone fragments that were found several months after the organization's 2012 expedition. Reportedly, they could remnants of Earhart's body.
Also this comment from the Gizmodo article sums up my thoughts
I’ve seen this show already. They’ll spend 115 minutes discussing how interesting this theory is and how it might be true and what implications that has, then say, “I guess we’ll never know” as the credits roll.
[editline]7th July 2017[/editline]
like for fucks sake, if this was real, this would have been submitted to a journal first. Not the fucking history channel
Is it really such a big deal to know what the exact circumstances of the death of an airplane pilot a century ago were?
Shawn Henry, a former executive assistant director for the FBI is the guy behind it. Seems like a pretty credible guy given he was brought onto the FBI by Robert Mueller when he was the FBI director.
https://archives.fbi.gov/archives/news/pressrel/press-releases/shawn-henry-named-executive-assistant-director-of-the-criminal-cyber-response-and-services-branch
Firstly, Shawn Henry joined the FBI in 1988 when William Sessions was director.
Secondly, that doesn't preclude anybody from making shit up, or clinging to evidence that is wrong. Gavin Menzies was a Lt. Commander on British Submarines before writing a book about how china supposedly discovered america first, but surprise surprise it's full of shit and the evidence faked. There is zero reason to believe this picture is of Ameila Earhart and her navigator. What they're clinging to is no different than on ghost shows when they're listening to the audio they captured and they make out "words".
same shit different medium. If they were serious about this discovery they would have published it in an academic peer-reviewed journal, not gone to the history channel.
BIG if true.
Poor choice of words on my part about Shawn Henry, I meant he was brought on by Mueller as the executive assistant director. I'll give you half on that.
Secondly you could be right. It's not like I haven't said that before. It's possible you're right, but its also possible you're wrong. Maybe what's suggested leans more favorably to your thinking. But I'd say a counter argument to make to your way of thinking is that you have to remember Shawn Henry is a private citizen at this point. History Channel is more than likely providing him a significant monetary compensation for his work, which much like a patron pays more than submitting your evidence to a journal. Sending something to a journal would more than likely be free, unless you received a grant for the work, which in the end also is a form of monetary compensation.
To play devils advocate with myself to save you the trouble :) one could go back to your argument and say that he is making it all up because he wants the money. And either one History Channel knows he's lying or two they don't care to fact check and just take his word on it. Or maybe Shawn Henry is being played a fool by the History Channel. Who knows.
In the end there's three sides here. You can choose to believe it, choose not to believe it, or choose to not give a fuck. I personally think its fun to believe in. Maybe in the end of all this you'll be 100% correct and I'll have to bend the knee to you. Haha

You have a point, but in regards to this particular article the ones I listed stand in many different spectrums of biases. They all reported the same information.
Not exactly relevent since most news outlets are pretty bad when it comes to reporting new history / science shit, where they'll report whatever seems juicy without too much fact checking.
You're best off with more primary sources or something investigative with these things.

Says the person who used a questionable source to debunk the photo. I mean you literally found a random website that never covers stuff like this. They deal in computer/technology related news. So I find it incredibly odd that you'd say I need to use more primary sources when extremetech is not a primary source.

Read the content, and look at the citations. It makes lots of direct and indirect citations that are easy to go and look at.
Alternative you can also look at what was in bdd's post, or you can wait til the documentary airs and pisses people off. Some of the sources you gave even cast doubt on your theory lmao

Okay the gig is up, I can't defend that theory any longer lol. I was trying to play devils advocate, but no you're 100% right. Tighar is a really good source. You pulled that Ace out of your sleeve. So formally I'll bend the knee just like they do in Game of Thrones.
