Time to buy a 3DS XL
Sucks that only Japan gets it in October. Oh well, at least this time they actually decided to release MH4 outside of Japan.
There's something nostalgic about these graphics. In a way I'm sad that PS4/XO games will never look like this again. :(
I bought a 3ds XL and the only things I've found worth playing are Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and the new Fire Emblem.
I'm really looking forward to MH4U, even if it's mostly an excuse to brush dust off my 3ds.
Why are they releasing normal MH4 and ultimate like a month after...?

They aren't. MH4 has already been released in Japan for a while and MH4U is coming out in Japan later this year. Regular MH4 has not and will not be localized for the rest of the world, but we're getting the localized MH4U in 2015.
Basically, we're skipping MH4 and getting the ultimate version next year.

Capcom needs to put these games on consoles that people actually have because they'd make tons of money. The Wii U version is good (if you have one) but the 3DS version is garbage. It really sucks that 4 is 3DS exclusive too meaning unbearable frame rates and no second joystick.

Eh, I've been dealing with the 3DS version of MH3U and I wouldn't call it garbage. It has it's fair share of problems (mainly underwater fights being fucking awful without a second joystick) but it's not so horrendously terrible that I'm constantly wishing I had the Wii U version instead.
I've been told MH4 doesn't have underwater fights though, and it being 3DS exclusive hopefully means that they're fine tuning the performance on the 3DS so there at least aren't any frame rate issues.
I only played the demo for MH3U on the 3DS and it just seemed impossible to play without the second stick add on. Is there at least a way to lock on to the monsters? It would make fighting a whole lot easier.

Capcom knows their business better than you do. They put Monster Hunter on portable because it sells best on portable because portable is extremely popular in Japan.
I mean i'd love to have MHFU on a workable console with two joysticks as well, it makes sense from a gameplay standpoint, but from the top down it probably wouldn't be a lucrative business decision when they're already blazing trails right down the middle of the portable market.
I've never had framerate issues on 3U so far.
And there is Circle Pad Pro I guess.

For anything larger than the regular trash, you can press their picture on the touch screen to lock on, pressing the left shoulder button instantly focuses the camera on them.
seriously just buy a circle pad pro. they're pretty inexpensive.
you shouldn't HAVE to, but until nintendo produce a 3ds with it built in (probably won't happen) it's more or less the only answer

The underwater fights are terribad irregardless of having a second joystick or not. If anything MH3U should have just followed portable 3rd's formula on the PSP and removed underwater fights all together.
Also MH4 is all about climbing n shit, so the lock on will have even more use. But even then I still miss crab style hand control when playing the PSP versions.
