Looks very pretty after all those complaints over that first concept video. Nice to be reminded that I didn't imagine Jason Isaacs is the Captain.
I assume this is the same one. I guess those things are just straight up Klingons then and not an older less evolved variant? ehhhh. [editline]edit[/editline] It looks ok, I'm not really happy with my first impressions, but I'll have to actually watch the episodes to get a grasp on it, because right now it doesn't really feel like Star Trek. I'm going to give it a chance at least.
The Comic-Con panel made me hopeful. They confirmed once again that that it will remain consistent with the current lore (they emphasized consistency with TOS, but probably only because of how close it takes place) all they've done is changed the visuals. The Klingon armour seen in the trailer is not every Klingon's armor, it is just specific to that House/family. [editline]22nd July 2017[/editline] Trek Movie live tweeted the Comic-Con panel if anyone wants to know what was said https://twitter.com/TrekMovie/
They confirmed once again that that it will remain consistent with the current lore (the emphsized TOS, but probably because of how close it takes place) all they've done is changed the visuals.
Clearly not, if you wanted to emphsize the TOS connection with how close it is technologically, then you should have gone down the route of Enterprise, which tried to at the very least balance the "outdated" technology with modern era tech. Because right now everything looks like TMP era technologically, which is silly.
The Klingon armour seen in the trailer is not every Klingon's armor, it is just specific to that House/family.
It's not the armour I give a shit about, it's the Klingons themselves.
The Klingon armour seen in the trailer is not every Klingon's armor, it is just specific to that House/family.
Is the Klingon look specific to that house too or are they all going to be shittier versions of Sarris from Galaxy Quest? Either way probably wont watch it because of the platform it's being delivered on.
Yeah, Enterprise had the perfect story to explain why Klingons look the way they do and now they're throwing that out. Otherwise it looks well produced, the visuals are on par with other modern Sci-Fi shows like the Expanse. But I hope they have a lot of themes revolving around the human condition, instead of just good effects and action.
Is the Klingon look specific to that house too or are they all going to be shittier versions of Sarris from Galaxy Quest?
Don't you mean the Scarran from Farscape. [editline]edit[/editline] Like seriously. [t]http://i.imgur.com/xJ8sf9W.png[/t]
Don't you mean the Scarran from Farscape. [editline]edit[/editline] Like seriously. [t]http://i.imgur.com/xJ8sf9W.png[/t]
I didn't want to taint my all time favorite show (farscape) by comparing it to this.
They're not going to explain anything, it is a brand new look. The era made in 2017, not 1960. All they're keeping is the lore.
They're not going to explain anything, it is a brand new look. The era made in 2017, not 1960. You can have your cake and eat it too if you want it to look more modern before the TOS era, but you have to make it look intentionally older in certain places is all, sort of like they would in an Alien movie, they haven't attempted anything at all.
Here is the Starfleet Away team gear http://trekcore.com/blog/2017/07/discoverys-federation-gear-beams-to-san-diego/ [t]http://trekcore.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/phaser1.jpg[/t] [t]http://trekcore.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/phaser3.jpg[/t] [t]http://trekcore.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/phas-rifle.jpg[/t] [t]http://trekcore.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/sfgear.jpg[/t] Klingon Gear http://trekcore.com/blog/2017/07/star-trek-discoverys-klingons-invade-comic-con/ It based around an event mentioned in TOS, but never seen. But they haven't said what that event is yet. [editline]22nd July 2017[/editline] They said at the panel that the Klingons will speak 'real' Klingon, people that have actually learned the language will understand them. Don't worry, there will be subtitles.
What... The... Hell... CBS What are you doing... Why are the Klingons soo well "Un-Klingon" and those ships... I don't see no Warbirds or Bird's of Prey... Fuck :ohno: :why:
The silhouette is certainly reminiscent of a bird of prey. It's like a much bulkier, more industrial, variation. Maybe this House doesn't have access to the shipyards/resources/craftsmen other houses do (an outcast house, operating outside the Klingon government proper)? Klingons in this one are pretty close to Klingons as depicted in the present run. They're probably just trying to keep the look consistent for folks who jumped on to Star Trek back when the reboot (what was it, '09?) happened. was that fucking DWIGHT?
Is the Klingon look specific to that house too or are they all going to be shittier versions of Sarris from Galaxy Quest? Either way probably wont watch it because of the platform it's being delivered on.
Its actually a pretty interesting story about these klingons For those who haven't watched Star Trek Enterprise: [sp]The Klingons steal technology used to create augmented humans like Khan. But it had a side effect of turning every klingon who used into a more human appearance. (hence their appearance in TOS), theres a throwaway line at the end of Enterprise that says something amung the lines of "Plastic Cranial Ridge surgery is about to become really popular". Theres even another throwaway line in Deep Space 9 that shows Klingons are actually really touchy about these events.[/sp] If they're going with this story then it be very possible for both the original klingon design and the new klingon design to be canon. At least I'm praying they're actually planning this, because then it would show a lot of research into the series.
Wait, this is on netflix in the UK? Fuck, we are stuck with it on CBS bullshit here, hell, I don't even know if Im going to even like this, it doesn't seem very Star Trek, it seems very J J Abrams Star Trek
As always modern sci-fi VFX houses have loaded up their shotguns with greeble-shot. That Klingon ship (I think it's supposed to be a Negh'Var mixed with a D7???) is an absolute visual mess, reminiscent of the baddie ship from Star Trek 2009. Starship designs in previous Star Treks were simple for reasons other than low budget. When was the last time you saw a naval vessel with that much greeble on it? There's no reason to have mechanisms outside the ship that don't need to be, but VFX assholes have to justify their prices so they spend untold hours just coating ships with useless nonsense with minimal engineering reasoning. Jeffreys' starship designs, as with all significant Trek ships pre-2009, had actual blueprints depicting what was where in accordance to the physical rules of the Trek universe. Warp cores are in the engineering section feeding the nacelles. Sensor pallets are mounted at regular intervals along the saucer rim. The deflector is where it can project in front of the ship. They didn't just put a shitload of pipes and machinery everywhere OUTSIDE the hull and then either justify it when needed by the script, or just completely ignore it.
I don't know how I feel about this. Action in the movies is fine, an hour and a half of boring talking politics doesn't make good film. But in the shows you have potentially seasons and seasons of plot you can slowly sift through and this looks like it's made for anyone who gets bored if something doesn't blow up every 20 seconds or less.
So there is small reference to Enterprise in the dialogue of the Discovery SDCC trailer Sarek says "Challenge your preconceptions, or they'll challenge you", that is a Vulcan saying mentioned in Season 1
I don't know how I feel about this. The trailer is edited this way to grab peoples attention. They said there will be peaceful solutions for conflicts in the show. Why did they use the music from the Terminator Genesis trailer? I mean the Zeff's favourite song is right here:
The over-use of flares and weird post processing effects make this look like a fan-made series with all the shit he could throw in to try and make it look edgy, and ended up making it worse.
Starship designs in previous Star Treks were simple for reasons other than low budget. When was the last time you saw a naval vessel with that much greeble on it? They didn't just put a shitload of pipes and machinery everywhere OUTSIDE the hull and then either justify it when needed by the script, or just completely ignore it.
This is exactly what made the Borg Cube feel so alien and intimidating in TNG. I mean, take a Borg Cube and design it with Federation design philosophies in mind. It's a smooth cube with some red and blue paint. Big whoop. Adding a shitload of greeble, lattices and piping made it different to everything else in the series, and is what took it from being just a cube to an alien vessel. These Klingon ships just look like a visual mess not in line with anything else we've seen, which has typically been swooping lines and imagery inspired by birds of prey, with a section for "wings" and a section for a "head." The first ship we see seems to follow that design, but with far too many additional elements. I can look past it if they provide a damn good reason in lore, but as of now it's putting me off.
I'm entertaining the theory that this house is a very very old house and has been asleep or lost or something for a long ass time and because of that they look WAY different.
I'm entertaining the theory that this house is a very very old house and has been asleep or lost or something for a long ass time and because of that they look WAY different.
That theory has been disproven already They are a modern house using uniform designs inspired by ancient klingons. That giant cathedral looking ship however might actually be old. Since it doesn't match any of the other Klingon ships in the trailer. One of the shots also has it parked on the surface of a planetoid

Literally all post-2009 Trek series:
